Anomaly
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An anomaly is something which deviates from the standard or expected. It is an irregularity which may be difficult to explain using existing rules or theory. In Medicine, anomaly often refers to a marked deviation from the standard, especially due to congenital defects.

[edit] In science
- In astronomy (and also in astrodynamics), the anomaly is the angular distance of a planet from its periapsis:
- The true anomaly is observed from the primary (I.e., from the orbit's focus);
- The eccentric anomaly is observed from the centre of the ellipse, using a projection of the planet's position onto the circumscribing circle; and
- The mean anomaly is the fraction of an orbital period that has elapsed, expressed as an angle.
- In an anomaly time series the times are not uniformly spaced.
- In physics, an anomaly is a classical symmetry that is not a symmetry of the quantum theory. See anomaly (physics) and conformal anomaly, chiral anomaly, gravitational anomaly, gauge anomaly, mixed anomaly, global anomaly, parity anomaly.
- In geodesy and geophysics, the gravity anomaly (e.g., Bouguer anomaly or free-air anomaly) measures variations in the Earth's gravitational field.
- In spacecraft operations, an anomaly is an event that results in an unexpected and unwanted event that may cause a negative impact to the state of health of the spacecraft.
- In software testing an anomaly (see IEEE 1044-1993: Standard Classification for Software Anomalies) is everything that differs from expectation. This expectation can result from a document or also from a persons notion or experiences. Also an anomaly can be a feature or an usability problem, because the testobject may be correct regarding the specification - but it can be improved. Another possibility for an anomaly is that a tester executed the testcase wrong and therefore the expected result is also wrong. Like IEEE says, the word anomaly should be favoured instead of e.g. fault, failure, error, defect or problem, because it has more neutral meaning.
[edit] In pseudoscience and mysticism
- The Ararat anomaly, an object on Mount Ararat claimed to be Noah's Ark.
- The anomaly, a spiritual belief system.
[edit] In arts and entertainment
- Anomaly (dk-band) is a rock 'n' metal band from Denmark.
- Anomaly (band) is a Progressive Metal band from Malta.
- Anomaly (Enterprise episode) is a third season episode of Star Trek: Enterprise.
- Anomaly (comics) is a DC Comics villain.
- The protagonist in the Storm (comic) is titled the Anomaly.
- The title of the Incubus song "Anna-Molly" is a play on the word "anomaly", which is repeatedly sung in the song's chorus.
[edit] In business
- Anomaly is the name of an advertising agency based in New York City.
- Anomaly is the Minneapolis based producer Jason Heinrichs. He's worked with Atmosphere and produced and released "Howle's Book" in 1998 on Groove Garden Records, featuring Slug, Eye-Dea and DJ Abilities.
