Vasily Vereshchagin. The Apotheosis of War (1871).
Although inspired by Tamerlane's conquests, the painting came to be associated with the Russo-Turkish War, 1877-1878. Ever since the 19th century, it has been admired as one of the earliest artistic expressions of Pacifism.
It is exhibited at the Tretyakov Gallery of Moscow.
The two-dimensional work of art depicted in this image is in the public domain in the United States and in those countries with a copyright term of life of the author plus 100 years. This photograph of the work is also in the public domain in the United States (see Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp.).
