The Battle Frontier is a fictional island located in the Hoenn region in the video game Pokémon Emerald that specializes in variations of Pokémon battling. After defeating the Elite Four and obtaining the National Pokedex, the trainer needs to obtain the Frontier Pass to roam freely around the Battle Frontier.

After winning at each of the Battle Frontier locations a certain amount of times, the trainer can fight the location's Leader (collectively known as "The Frontier Brains") for a chance to win silver and gold Battle Frontier badges. When the trainer defeats all of the leaders twice, the trainer gets special Berries and an extra star added to the Trainer's Card. A lansat berry is awarded for a complete set of silver symbols, and a starf berry is given to those who manage to obtain all gold symbols.

[edit] Battle Frontier Challenges

There are seven challenges in the Battle Frontier, each of which have different rules.

The Battle Pike is a giant building shaped like a Seviper. The trainer signs up chooses three Pokémon. The unique thing about the Battle Pike is that a trainer can get through almost the whole challenge without having to battle. In each room, the trainer is presented with a choice of three curtains, similar to the 1960's American television gameshow Let's Make a Deal. Following suit, what the trainer finds in the room behind each curtain can vary drastically from healing all the player's Pokémon, to having to fight an extremely difficult trainer. Other things include going through a maze with rare wild Pokémon and merely being presented with an NPC who talks to you. This must be done a total of seven times in order for the challenge to be considered completed. In order to put the odds in the player's favor, there is a Battle Pike assistant who will give enigmatic clues, that essentially reduce the gueeswork down to a 50/50 ratio.

After 28 and 140 room completions, the trainer faces off against Pike Queen Lucy. If the trainer defeats her, she awards the Silver Luck Symbol if this is the trainer's first 28-room completion, and the Gold Luck Symbol if this is the trainer's 140-room completion.

Lucy's name resembles the word, "luck." Similarly, the Battle Pike is the structure that tests one's luck.

In the Battle Dome, the trainer is placed in a tournament with 15 other people. He/she has to progress through the first leg, quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals of the tournament to become the Champion of that challenge. The trainer can choose between single or double battles, and then pick a team of three Pokémon to battle with. The trainer can see the opponents' Pokémon and one move from each of the Pokémon. Before each battle, the trainer selects two of his/her Pokémon to fight. Once the trainer is done, they are led to an actual arena where the battles ensue. After five and ten tournament wins (single battle only), the trainer can fight Dome Ace Tucker. He surrenders the Silver or Gold Tactics symbol, depending whether this is the trainer's first or second time to come across him respectively. Tucker's team of Pokémon counterbalance each other's weaknesses, to take advantage of the two-Pokémon only rule.

Tucker's name is from tactics, the thing the Battle Dome tests.

In the Battle Factory, the attendee takes the trainer to a room where the trainer chooses three out of six random rental Pokémon on offer. When the trainer is ready to test out the his rental Pokémon, the trainer can go into the battle room and battle. If the trainer wins, he can swap one of the his current rental Pokémon for one of the Pokémon of the defeated trainer. Once the trainer has won 7 battles against trainers sporting random Pokémon, the trainer will be escorted to the entrance room.

On the trainer's 21st and 42nd battle in a row without losing, the trainer will come face-to-face with Factory Head Noland. If the trainer beats him, the trainer will earn either a Silver or Gold Knowledge Symbol. Like everyone else, Noland will have a team of random Pokémon.

Noland's name comes from knowledge, the thing the Battle Factory tests.

In the Battle Arena, the trainer has a standard three-versus-three battle; however, if he doesn't knock out the opponent's Pokémon in three turns, he is judged on mind (use of offensive moves), skill (effectiveness of moves) and body (ratio of HP at the beginning and end of battle) to decide the outcome. A circle is worth two points, a triangle is worth one point, and a letter X is worth zero points. The Pokémon with less points faints immediately. In the event of a tie, both Pokémon faint. During the battle, the trainer cannot switch between Pokémon.

After 28 and 56 consecutive wins in the Arena, the trainer can fight Arena Tycoon Greta. The first time the trainer defeats her, they are given the prize of the Silver Guts Symbol. Later on, the trainer get the Gold Guts Symbol.

Greta's name is from guts, which the Battle Arena tests.

In the Battle Palace, the trainer plays a standard, single three-versus-three battle. However, the trainer can't decide which attack that his Pokémon uses. Depending on their nature, they will like certain kinds of moves (offensive, defensive, or supporting). The attitude of the Pokémon may change if their health is low.

After 21 and 42 consecutive wins, the trainer can fight Palace Maven Spenser. Respectively, Spenser will award the trainer the Silver Spirits Symbol or Gold Spirits Symbol, depending on how many times the trainer has seen him previously.

Spenser's name comes from spirit, which the Battle Palace tests.

In the Battle Pyramid, the trainer chooses three Pokémon to accompany the trainer through a pyramid. The goal is to make it to the top of the pyramid by finding the blue warp-tiles and teleporting to the next level while avoiding trainers and wild Pokémon encounters. Initially, the visible space around the player's sprite is very small, making navigation harder. This space increases with each battle won. To limit the player's bagged items, the item bag is taken away and replaced with the Battle Bag, which stores items found inside the pyramid. Also, the participating Pokémon cannot hold any items from the item bag when signing up. At the end of the challenge, which spans seven floors, any new items held by the Pokémon are placed in the battle bag, which is once again exchanged with the item bag until another challenge. Each floor's wild Pokémon follow a specific theme.

After progressing through 21 and 70 floors, the trainer can fight the Pyramid King Brandon.

Brandon's name comes from brave, which the Battle Pyramid tests.

The Battle Tower consists of battling with other people. The trainer can choose from single battle, double battle, or true double battle (multi) modes. One rotation consists of seven trainers.

After 35 and 70 consecutive wins (1-on-1 only), the trainer can fight the Salon Maiden Anabel. Upon defeating her, she will confer upon the trainer the Silver Ability Symbol (for 35 wins) or the Gold Ability Symbol (for 70 wins). Also, after you beat 50 and 100 trainers, you will receive silver and gold shields respectively from Scott (the head of Battle Frontier), which can be displayed in your Secret Base.

Anabel features a Snorlax, Alakazam, and Entei.

Anabel's name comes from ability, which the Battle Tower tests.

A new Battle Tower will be featured in the upcoming Diamond and Pearl game. This Battle Tower will not be related with the Battle Tower in the Battle Frontier. The Battle Tower for Diamond and Pearl will be used for Wi-Fi battles and trades.

The Artisan Cave is a long cave connecting one end of the Battle Frontier to the other. It starts near the Battle Palace and the exit is right next to the Battle Tower. This cave is unique in that it only contains wild Smeargle.

There is a house next to the Battle Tower. Inside, there is a trainer who wants to trade a Skitty for a Meowth.

[edit] Record Hall

The record hall contains all of the records that the trainer set at the Battle Frontier for each of the facilities.

If the trainer mixes records with another Emerald game, they can also get the Battle Frontier records from the other game.

[edit] Catching Sudowoodo

A level 40 Sudowoodo is located in the southeast section of the Battle Frontier; like in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, if it is watered, it will attack. This is one of the only two ways to catch Sudowoodo in the third generation (the other being in Pokémon Colosseum.)

[edit] Move Tutors

In a house next to the Battle Dome, there are two move tutors. They will teach the trainer's Pokémon a selection of attacks for a price in Battle Points. The moves made available by the left tutor are also available in Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green.

[edit] Betting house

After the trainer gets 3 Silver symbols from any facility, in the house under the Battle Pyramid, there will be four people. One of those is a Hiker, and if the trainer talks to him, he will say that he's looking for someone to go into a certain kind of competition. If the trainer says yes to his request, he'll ask the trainer to give him 5, 10, or 15 battle points. If the trainer wins in whatever he asked, the trainer will get double the battle points back. The kind of competition changes every day and follows a regular pattern, but they all involve competitions within the various facilities.

[edit] Battle Frontier Exchange Service Corner

The Battle Frontier Exchange Service Corner sells various goods in exchange for Battle Points earned at other parts of the Battle Frontier. the trainer can purchase goods for the trainer's secret base, items for raising the statistics of the trainer's Pokémon, and items that the trainer can equip to the trainer's Pokémon.

In the animé, the Battle Frontier is set in Kanto, rather than Hoenn, with the individual parts scattered all over the region. After the Hoenn league, Ash Ketchum meets Scott in Viridian City, who invites Ash to visit, after seeing his skill against Agatha. The rules in each of the facilities also seem to be different than those in the game - for one, Ash challenges the head of the facility immediately, without having to win a series of battles first. In the Japanese theme song of Battle Frontier, everytime a Frontier Brain makes its anime debut, the Frontier Brain's silhouette will be revealed in the theme song.

Since the animé tends to follow the games to an extent, it is presumable that the reason the Battle Frontier has been moved to Kanto for the animé is in order to take elements from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen and from Pokémon Emerald.

The Battle Factory is located near Cerulean City. Instead of random Pokémon, Noland just has a lot, and the challenger may choose the Pokémon they will face in battle. The Pokémon he used for battle was an Articuno that he befriended. And in his possession, he has Venusaur, Machamp, Rhyhorn, Breloom, Rhydon, Lairon, Camerupt, Pinsir, Sandslash, Golduck, Manectric, and Trapinch.

The Battle Arena is located near Saffron City. Before the match begins, there is a special machine that used to determine if it's a 1-on-1 battle, 2-on-2 or 3-on-3 battle. Ash ended up with a double battle. Greta's Pokémon are Medicham & Hariyama V.S. Ash's Grovyle and Snorlax.

The Battle Dome is located near Lavender Town. Tucker's Pokémon are Arcanine & Swampert V.S. Ash's Corphish & Swellow.

The Battle Pike is located near Fuchsia City. Ash faced Lucy's Seviper and Milotic while Ash used Pikachu and Donphan. Other Pokémon Lucy has in her possession are Snorlax, Makuhita, Abra, Swinub, Skitty and Cyndaquil. Also, Lucy seems to have a crush on Brock.

The Battle Palace is located between Cinnabar Island and Seafoam Island. Spenser used Venusaur, Shiftry, and Claydol in Ash's Battle. Ash used Sceptile, Heracross, and Swellow. Spencer also has Chansey but was not used in the battle.

The Battle Tower is located near ToJoh Falls. Ash challenges the Salon Maiden Anabel using Pikachu, Corphish and Tauros while Anabel uses Metagross and Alakazam, and loses to her the first time. The second time Ash battles with Anabel she also uses Espeon. After he beats her she gives the location of the Battle Pyramid.

The last of the Facilities, the Battle Pyramid is located near Pewter City the first time Ash and his friends encounter it (it can lift itself off the ground and fly). The leader is Pyramid King Brandon.

The episode "Battle Pyramid! VS Regirock!" reveals that Regirock is somehow affiliated with the Battle Pyramid. This is similar to the events of the game, in which Brandon uses Regirock during his first battle with the player. The same episode revealed that the Battle Pyramid is mobile; it can be rendered airborne using turbines. This makes its location variable rather than fixed like the other Battle Frontier facilities.

The Battle Pyramid's new location is at the Ferrudan Ruins near the Indigo Plateau. After Ash arrived at the new location, Ash encountered Brandon again, and battled against the second Legendary Golem, Registeel.

Ash loses again, and there is a third and final encounter with Brandon against the third Legendary Golem, Regice.

For the final match, it was revealed that Brandon also has a Dusclops, a Ninjask and a Solrock. Ash will battle with Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charizard, and Squirtle while Brandon will battle with Ninjask, Solrock, Regice, and Dusclops. The first battle is Ash's Charizard against Brandon's Dusclops. After a long and hard battle, Ash's Charizard loses. Then he uses Bulbasaur, with good results. Brandon chooses Ninjask and Ash switches Bulbasaur out for Squirtle. Squirtle wins, but then it is then defeated by Brandon's Solrock. Then Ash used Bulbasaur again and after an incredible battle, both pokemon faint. Finally, Ash uses Pikachu against Brandon's Regice. Pikachu was frozen rock solid but then Pikachu, with powerful attacks finally beats Brandon's Regice. Ash finally receives the Brave Symbol and then a plaque from Scott, with all the Battle Frontier Symbols on it. Scott then offered a role to Ash as a Frontier Brain when the next one steps down. Ash however declined the role, and this marks the end of the Battle Frontier saga.

The card "Battle Frontier" from the EX: Emerald expansion is a particularly influential card to the Ruby/Sapphire and Hidden Legends-on formats, by shutting down such staples as "Pidgeot" from the EX: Fire Red/Leaf Green expansion. It is also the theme of the 2005-2006 league season for Pokemon Organized Play.
