Bioneer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bioneer root: "biological pioneer") is a term coined by filmmaker, author and eco-activist Kenny Ausubel. It describes very diverse individuals and groups working in diverse disciplines who crafted creative solutions to environmental and socio-cultural concerns rooted in their shared core values. These include whole systems (anticipatory) thinking, a view of all life as interdependent, and sustainable mutual aid.
In many cases the technological or social solutions to problems they showcase are founded on emulation of natural self-organizing systems.
Ausubel founded an annual conference (with same name) that still takes place annually in San Rafael, California on the third weekend in October. It highlights the work of these champions and helps support, nurture and propagate their ideas and models. During the last 15 years, it has become a inter-regional rondezvous that attracts some of the earth's more effective doers and global brain thinkers who are leading diverse cross-cultural dialogs about global INTERdependence.
They come from interdisciplinary fields: environmental and socio-political activism; "green" biology, chemistry, design, architecture and urban planning; organic and "beyond organic" farming and gardening; indigenous perspectives; biodiversity and wildland preservation; alternative energy; engaged spirituality, literature and the arts; holistic and "ecological" medicine; ethnobotany; socially-responsible entrepreneurship, business and philanthropy; the environmental justice, women's and youth movements; independent media; etc.
This conference has also grown in the last five years with the addition of 16 simultaneous satellite conferences that model themselves after the conference in San Rafael, screening video feeds of the major speakers at the national conference, but also creating conferences that focus on more regional solutions and presenters.
Bioneer is also a Korean biotechnology company, Bioneer.com.
Bioneers(cc) is also the name of the northern New Mexico-based non-profit organization that was originally created to produce the annual event, but whose activities have expanded far beyond that to include a much wider (and steadily growing) array of projects.
Some of the non-profit's events and projects include: hands-on trainings in various aspects of organic agriculture; the building of a membership base; books; radio series; audio-tapes and DVDs; newsletters; reports; live satellite feeds of the conference to many locales; spin-off events around the country and internationally; film festivals; special youth organizing initiatives; etc.
Bioneers may be a servicemark of the Collective Heritage Institute. During Fall 2000, a pioneering crew of young people shared the Bioneers Youth Initiative at an impromptu lawn gathering at the Bioneers Conference in San Rafael, California.
