Cosmos (Adams in Japan, Disco in Italy) is the Autobots' reconnaissance & communications specialist in space. Rocketing around the vast gulfs of outer space might seem like fun, but Cosmos knows the truth: it gets lonely up there. Sure, he understands that every Autobot has a job to do in the battle against the Decepticons, and he accepts his without argument, but he's not always happy about it. Sometimes, to relieve the boredom of a long vigil orbiting the Earth, he'll zip down at night and scare a few humans by hovering over their backyards. He also delights in showing off his maneuverability by zig-zagging through an occasional meteor shower. But mostly he maintains his solitary orbit. At least he's comforted by one thought: he never gets stuck in traffic jams like his auto-like brethren below.
As a spacecraft, Cosmos can achieve Earth orbit and, with enough fuel, can reach escape velocity and go for relatively short jaunts, the Moon and back for example. He can reach speeds of 40,000 miles per hour. He can use himself as a communications satellite by bouncing signals from one Earth location to another. His optical sensors can see and record objects as small as a bicycle from 600 miles high. He has a high-powered particle beam capability that he can use with pinpoint accuracy in either spaceship or robot mode. Cosmos is not well-suited to function as a robot on the ground; he's slow, awkward, and physically weak. Sometimes in his search for some pleasant diversions to relieve his boredom, he neglects his job. This unreliability can occasionally result in problems for any Autobot depending on him.
[edit] Animated Series
Cosmos first appeared in episode 36, Megatron's Master Plan Part 2. His last appearance was in episode 89, Grimlock's New Brain. The inflection of Cosmos' voice was a tribute to Peter Lorre
[edit] Marvel Comics
Beachcomber, Blaster, Cosmos, Perceptor, Powerglide, Seaspray and Warpath were part of an Autobot team on Cybertron in the Earth year 1986. They battled the Decepticons led by Straxus over the Space Bridge and the Autobots were stranded on Earth (Transformers #18).
They were then captured by Circuit Breaker and her Rapid Anti-Robot Attack Team, taken to her lab and then disceted (Transformers #21-22).
Circuit Breaker then captured Autobots Air Raid, Fireflight, Silverbolt, Skids,Skydive and Slingshot. Using the parts from all the captured Autobots she created a giant Autobot with herself in control, striking a deal with them that if they would co-operate she would let them go. Circuit Breaker then used them to oppose the Decepticon Battlechargers Runabout and Runamuck who were attacking the Statue of Liberty. After defeating the Decepticons with Circuit Breaker the Autobots were released (Transformers #23).
[edit] Transformers: Universe (2004)
The character of Generation One Cosmos made one Universe appearance in the BotCon 2004 vocal play.
2004 Voice actor play plot - Rhinox has built a device to deflect Unicron's attempts to pull victims from other dimensions with his tractor beam. The Autobots deflect two attempts and the victims end up on a frozen planetoid instead of with Unicron. Maximals Rattrap and Silverbolt and the Predacon Waspinator are sent to help the victims, but Reptilion, Sunstorm, Ruination and Perceptor are sent to get them for Unicron. As a side effect of the device Rhinox built, a vortex opens which sucks in an Autobot shuttle from the past piloted by Bumblebee, Tracks and Cosmos. Thrust attacks the Maximal ship, but they are saved by being transported to the Autobot shuttle. The Autobots and Maximals then go to the planet where they save the victims from the Decepticons. On the planet are two groups of Autobots. One is from the Robots in Disguise story, with Landfill (Walmart recolor), Side Burn (Universe recolor) and Prowl (Universe recolor). The other is from another parallel world with Spychanger Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus, Prowl and Ironhide. They all fight off the Decepticons. The Autobot shuttle is sent back to its own time.
According to Unicron.com, Cosmos' alt. mode was inspired by actual picturs of a U.F.O!
