[edit] Original Design
Death's original design was for Flight 180 to explode, killing everyone on board. However, since Alex has his premonition, he gets others off, saving them. In order, they would have died like this: Tod, Terry, Ms Lewton, Carter, Billy, Clear, and Alex.
[edit] Actual Deaths
The order in which they actually die is different because some get saved and moved to the end of the order. In most of the instances, a dark reflection of sorts can be seen, usually signifying that Death is nearby. The actual order of death is as follows:
[edit] Tod Waggner
- Death: Strangulation. First, a gust of wind blows through an open window and shuts the door to the bathroom while Tod is in it, so as to minimize intervention. Water leaks out of a poorly screwed pipe in the back of his toilet, creating a puddle that he does not notice while grooming himself in the bathroom and is listening to the radio. He then walks over to the tub and slips on the puddle, causing him to fall on a clothesline cord, which snaps off the wall and, pulled by the velocity of Tod's fall, wraps around his neck and strangles him in the tub, while he struggles to stand up, but only manages to kick over bottles of shampoo and soap, spilling them inside the tub and making it slippery and preventing him from getting to his feet. The blood vessels in his eyes burst as he tries to break free from the wire and reach a pair of scissors on the counter across the room. He slowly weakens and finally dies, and then the water snakes its way back under the toilet, disappearing as if it never leaked.
- Note: Tod's death is the only death in the trilogy in which an obvious malevolent hand is portrayed: the leak that causes the 'accident' is removed from the scene, making Tod's death look like the only suicide in all three movies. All other deaths occur as 'accidents' although the viewer knows Death causes them.
[edit] Terry Chaney
- Death: Blunt force trauma. While sitting at a café and talking with Clear, Alex watches as a bus speeds by in the reflection of the window. As Alex turns around to look, he discovers that it isn't there. Shortly after, Carter drives by with Terry, and decides to pull over to argue with Alex. As he does, Ms Lewton shows up, and Carter shoves it in Alex's face that Ms. Lewton has to move all because of Alex's premonition. Alex is still trying to tell everyone that Death is still coming for them, and Clear is trying to stop him. It all ends up in a huge arguement that Terry decides to break up. As she gets out of the car, she starts yelling at Carter to get over the plane crash. As she does, she backs up into the street. She finally tells Carter to just drop dead. At that moment, she steps into the street, right into the path of a speeding bus, which then maims her and sends blood flying everywhere.
Note: In the scene before Terry walks out onto the street, there is construction blocking the road where the bus comes from, further showing Death's infleuence in the film.
[edit] Ms. Valerie Lewton
- Death: Stabbing. She suffers the most violent and longest death. While she is packing, she makes some tea in a kettle on her stove. She sees a dark reflection on the kettle and turns around to check, but sees nothing. When she pours the tea into a mug, she notices that it bears her High School's name, freaks out, and throws out its contents. She then gets a hold of herself, gets a bottle of vodka out of the freezer, and pours it into the mug. The sudden drastic temperature change causes the mug to crack and leak, to which she is oblivious. She drinks the vodka as she walks over to her computer, leaving a trail of it on the floor, then she inadvertently holds it over her computer monitor as the vodka leaks into it and causes it to start to smoke and spark. She notices this, and when she walks up to the monitor to examine it, it explodes and a glass shard from the screen flies into her neck, causing her to bleed extensively when she pulls it out. As she attempts to hold the blood in, a spark from the monitor ignites the vodka trail, following her to the kitchen where the stove ignites, the vodka bottle explodes on the counter, and she falls to the floor. She reaches up to the counter for a cloth, not realizing that it is draped over a block of knives. She pulls on the cloth, resulting in the fall of the knife block, and one of the knives stabs her in the chest. Alex then shows up to save her, but when he attempts to remove the knife, the oven explodes, knocking down a chair, which lodges it in further and kills her. Alex removes the knife, then realizes that she is dead and runs out of the house, immediately after which it explodes.
Note: Before the PC explodes, when you look behind Ms. Lewton when she is standing up, you will notice a stained glass window, displaying a knife.
[edit] Carter Horton (Skipped)
- Death (Alex saved him): Crushing. Carter drives his car onto railroad tracks to prove that death does not have a pattern. When a train comes, he calmly proceeds to get out of the car, only to realize that the door lock is stuck in the locked position and a train is coming. Alex, using his clairvoyant knowledge that Carter's seatbelt would rip, pulls him out of the car just before the train smashes into the car.
[edit] Billy Hitchcock
- Death: Partial Decapitation. While Billy screams at Carter that he is next and that he's not staying around him, a chain dangling from the speeding train hits a piece of metal shrapnel on the ground left from Carter's car and propels it at Billy, cutting off the top half of his head, killing him instantly. His headless body stands momentarily until it collapses to the side (the group was unaware, at this point, that Alex had, in fact, changed the order by intervening in Carter's death when Alex saved him).
- Right after Billy dies you can see that Carter has soiled himself.
[edit] Clear Rivers (Skipped)
- Death (Alex saved her): Incineration. During a severe thunderstorm, a telephone wire is struck down from its post, causing deadly trouble for Clear as she attempts to escape her house. She gets outside and the dog is barking at the livewire, and Clear saves him. The wind picks up and sends the sharp end of a clothes-dryer pole flying out of the ground, into the side of Clear's pool. The side caves in, and water floods out and spills towards her, electrified by the livewire. She tries to climb up the side of the house, and succeeds, but the livewire flares up, causing the TV to explode as she gets back on her feet. As she races toward her garage, all the electric appliances she passes explode. When she gets to the garage, she jumps into her car, but realizes that the garage door remote won't work. She decides to reverse right through the door, but as she does, the axle bar detaches from the roof and stabs into the hood of her car, preventing her from going any further. The livewire then lands on her car as well, making it impossible to touch anything in her car without being electrocuted to death. Alex arrives and tries to help her by swatting at the livewire with a shovel, but accidentally smashes a propane tank, causing it to fly under her gas tank while leaking its flammable gas. A trail of leaking gasoline from the garage trails under Clear's car towards the propane tank, and is ignited, igniting the spraying propane, and heating the gasoline tank to the point that it is about to explode. Alex grabs the livewire and pulls it off of the car, giving Clear the oppurtunity to escape. As she does, the car explodes, and Clear survives.
===Alex Browning
- Death: Decapitation. Six months later, after Death's list was fully ran through, Clear, Alex, and Carter finally get to Paris and stop at a café. The long absence of close calls has led them to believe that all three had been skipped, and they can now have a chance at a full life. Alex is still pondering the chance of Death going after them again, but Carter assures him that as long as Alex is alive, Carter and Clear would be fine. Alex gets a feeling that something is about to happen (from signs such as a busker across the street playing Rocky Mountain High), and leaves the restaurant quickly, not wanting to endanger the others. As he's crossing the street, Clear calls to him, stopping him just as a passing bus swerves to avoid him by inches and runs into a street lamp, which is knocked out of the ground and hits a large illuminated sign above the café, knocking it off its standpoint. It swings down, and Alex(who is traumatized),is unable to move, just as the sign
swiftly catches the side of a building and sends a letter shooting down from the sign, decapitating him in the blink of an eye.
[edit] Carter Horton
- Death: Blunt force trauma. Just as Alex is about to be hit by the swinging neon sign, Carter pulls him out of the way. He stares at Alex in triumph.
- "I told you you were next!"
- "Then it just skipped me!"
- "So who's next?"
- The large neon sign swings back, this time behind Carter, but the screen cuts to black right before Carter is smashed by the sign.
It is worth noting that each method of death is alluded to in the opening scene. As the camera pans around Alex's bedroom, the camera lingers on a number of images which describe how someone will die in the film. For example, a print in a book about the French Revolution showing a beheading by guillotine is a direct reference to the partial decapitation of Billy Hitchcock.
[edit] Alex Browning
- Death: Head trauma. Since Carter saved Alex from death, Alex was skipped and put after Clear on Death's list. Alex and Clear do not die in this film, but Alex dies in between Final Destination and Final Destination 2. According to the sequel, Alex is killed in an alley by a falling brick that was pushed by a gust of wind.
- Note: Again, Alex did not die in this film and his death was not a major plot to the sequel, as it was mentioned only briefly. Since he died shortly after Carter, it makes sense to include his death for this film page. In an alternate ending, Alex actually dies saving Clear; he is electrocuted and then burned to death. Additionally, there was a scene filmed in which Alex is set on fire when intervening in Clear's death, as well as a scene where he gets decapitated by a stray rudder from a downed helicopter, but eventually it was decided that Alex would survive in this film.
[edit] Clear Rivers
- Death: Incineration. Clear survives this film. In Final Destination 2, the viewer learns that after the death of Clear's boyfriend, Alex Browning, she voluntarily enters a mental hospital, where she is kept in a padded room. But when Kimberly Corman, the protagonist of the second film, asks for her help, Clear checks out. Towards the end of the sequel, when things seem to be normal, she goes and checks on Eugene Dix. But by opening the door to the hospital room, it causes an explosion resulting to Clear and Eugene's immediate death.
- Note: Clear was the ONLY survivor from Flight 180. She dies in the sequel, Final Destination 2. Also note, that her original death on the plane was incineration, her planned death (which was intervened) in FD1 was incineration and her eventual demise was caused by incineration.
