Demetrios (Δημήτριος) is a Greek Orthodox christian name, derived from the name of Demeter, the Earth Mother, or ancient Greek goddess of agriculture. A common english transliteration is James. This is thought to be a common transliteration due to the proximity in date between St Demetrios and St James day in Christian Calendars.
Often transliterated as Dimitrios, due to the reduction of Greek phonemes Η Eta is often subtituted with the Iota, or Ι in the roman script. Consequently, both Dimitrios and Demetrios are appropriate Latin alphabet spellings.
