The Commonwealth Electoral Division of Throsby is an Australian electoral division located in the State of New South Wales. It has an area of 387kmĀ² and consists of all of the Local Government Area of Shellharbour and the southern portion of the adjacent Local Government Area of Wollongong including the Port Kembla heavy industry area and the rapidly growing residential areas around Dapto.
The seat is named after Charles Throsby, a prominent pioneer and explorer in the early nineteenth century of the areas to the south of Sydney.
The Division of Throsby was created in a redistribution in 1984 and has been represented by the Australian Labor Party since its inception. This is due to the strong working-class character of the area due to the presence of industries such as steelmaking, coal mining and stevedoring.
Its current Member of Parliament is Jennie George, a former President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions in the 1990s. She holds Throsby with a 15.1% margin.
