Domžale (historically Domseldorf) is a municipality (Slovene občina) near Ljubljana in the eastern part of the Upper Carniolan region of Slovenia. The principal town is Domžale, which is surrounded by a number of villages and settlements, including Dob, Dragomelj, Gorjuša, Groblje, Ihan, Jarše, Količevo, Preserje, Radomlje, Rodica, Vir. To the north is the town of Kamnik. Domžale is known today for its flourishing small businesses, agriculture, and light industry (Količevo Paper Mill, Tosama, Helios). It is the site of the renaissance castle Krumperk. It has a lively traditional music scene.
The municipality lies near the foothills of the Kamnik Alps and is crossed by the river Kamniška Bistrica, originating in the Alps above Kamnik. Its landscape is characterized by forested hills and agricultural plains.
Near Domžale stands the most powerful transmitter in Slovenia. It operates on the medium wave frequency 918 kHz and can be received at night throughout Europe. It uses as an aerial a 161 metre high guyed steel tube mast.
[edit] History
The remains of an ice-age hunter's dwelling at Babja jama in Gorjuša date to some 15,000 years ago. There is archaeological evidence of pre-Roman settlement (Illyrian, Celtic). Roman finds date to the time of the road connecting Aquileia, Æmona (today Ljubljana, and Celeia (today Celje). The area is first mentioned in the 12th century A.D. and is thought to have been settled at least a century earlier. A local nobleman and owner of the castle Krumperk, Adam Ravbar, was a victor in the Battle of Sisak, June 1593, in which the Turkish army was defeated.
Economic development accelerates in the 19th century with the industrialization of the local craft of straw weaving (Slovene slamnikarstvo), begun in the 18th century.
