Edward Joel Kowalczyk (born July 16, 1971 in York, Pennsylvania, USA) is the lead singer for the band LIVE. He counts among his influences the writer Jiddu Krishnamurti and philosopher Ken Wilber, and his lyrics reflect his mystical and spiritual tendency. He has worked with musician Stuart Davis, Glen Ballard, Dave Matthews, singer Anouk, British trip-hop star Tricky and the Counting Crows' Adam Duritz. He also appeared in the David Fincher film adaptation of Fight Club. He currently lives in Ojai, California, with his wife and two daughters, Ana Sophia and Natasha.
The singer made headlines when many fans noticed that American Idol contestant Chris Daughtry seemed to be duplicating Kowalczyk's vocal style and appearance (Kowalczyk is known for his shaved head). Such accusations gained even more ground when Daughtry performed a noticibly darker version of "I Walk The Line" by Johnny Cash on a telecast of American Idol. Immediately, many noticed this version was extremely similar to one done by Kowalczyk and his bandmates of LIVE years earlier. A publicity firestorm soon erupted, with fans and the media bashing Daughtry for failing to credit LIVE for writing that version of the song. However, any animostity was quelled, at least publicly, when it was discovered that Daughtry had in fact credited the band, only to have the section cut from the American Idol show, and also when LIVE performed with Chris Daughtry on the season finale of American Idol.
Kowalczyk has also developed a close friendship with British trip-hop pioneer Tricky and the two have worked together with Tricky contributing on LIVE's fifth studio album V on the song Simple Creed. Kowalczyk was featured in the Tricky song "Evolution Revolution Love", released in the 2001 album "Blowback."
