[edit] Recreation
Fairfield is home to three golf courses, two public and one private. Paradise Valley and Rancho Solano Golf Courses, both public, are rated in the Zagat Survey of “America’s Best Golf Courses,” rated 3 ½ stars by Golf Digest Magazine in 2004 and voted #1 & #2 golf courses in Solano County for consecutive years.
Rancho Solano Golf Course was designed by Gary Roger Baird, Rancho Solano celebrated its Opening Day in March 1990. It is nestled in the hills of Fairfield and offers well-manicured fairways, large, tiered greens and challenging holes for every level of golfer. Water is a factor on holes 2, 3, 4, and 5 on the front nine and holes 11, 12 and 14 on the back nine. Despite being an open course, club selection is important, especially on the challenging par 3’s. Rancho Solano is known for having some of the largest greens on Northern California courses.
Paradise Valley was Built in 1993 and designed by Robert Muir Graves, this course features many doglegs that follow the meandering creek. Mature trees line most of the fairways and water comes into play on nine of the holes. The 10th hole is Paradise Valley's signature hole. This par-5 hole requires a series of accurate shots. A well-placed tee shot just short of the lake sets up a second shot. The large oak tree just beyond the ravine, guards the shot to the green. Sand and grass bunkers surround the green; scoring par will be a challenge.
Green Valley Country Club is located in one of the most picturesque valleys in California, Green Valley Country Club provides unmatched country club facilities in a breathtaking setting. Once the world' largest cherry orchard, Green Valley Country Club was conceived in 1949 with the purchase of the 528 acre Jones Ranch from the fourth generation of the Jones family. Now the area is populated by herds of deer and flocks of wild turkeys not to mention the crows, woodpeckers, squirrels, and jack rabbits. From the grand mansion, built in 1856 of native stone and now the clubhouse, to the property surrounding it, an aura of history, legend and lore pervades the Green Valley country Club. Centuries of Indian history, hints of the Russian occupation, the California Bear Flag Revolt of 1846, and even the original Fremont Trail between Sutter's Fort and Solano Mission in Sonoma that transverses the golf course all are part of the fabric that exemplifies the spirit of the Club and its members.
