French, Winawer, Advance Variation

In chess, C18 is the ECO code for the French, Winawer, Advance Variation chess opening. The game begins 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e5 c5 5.a3 Bxc3+ 6.bxc3. Formerly called the Nimzowitch Variation, this line continues ...Qc7 or ...Qa5 or ...Ne7 followed by 7.Qg4 or 7.h4. It was favored by Mikhail Botvinnik and is the most popular response to the French. White has more space but lacks a sound pawn structure and is down the minor exchange. Judit Polgar and Vitaly Tseshkovsky have had tremendous success with White in this opening.
