Gampaha

Gampaha is a city in Sri Lanka and the capital of the Gampaha District in the Western Province, north of Colombo. Gampaha is separated from Colombo by mainly the Kalani River.
The word "Gampaha" is composed from "Gam", which means village and "paha", which means five. So the meaning is Five Villages. The five villages in the Gampaha city is Ihalagama, Pahalagama, Madagama, Aluthgama and Yagoda. Gampaha is most famous for the Botanical garden where the first rubber tree was planted in Sri Lanka which still remains.Gampaha is an urban city.
Gampaha is the District Capital of Gampaha District in the Western Province and is a principal town around Colombo. It is about 10 km. from Miriswatte on the Colombo Kandy Road Gampaha is connected by road to Miriswatte , Yakkala Ja Ela and Minuwangoda . Gampaha can be reached by Railway along Colombo Polgahawela Railway. Gampaha is the home of the famous Ayurveda Physician Wickremarachci who produced hundreds of Ayurveda Physicians who came to be known as Ayurveda Physicians of Gampaha. They are still found all over Sri Lanka.
Akaravita is a village in Gampaha where the famous Dilshan Gunawardena used to live, his grandparents still do. Also past President Mrs. Chandrika Bandaranaike's Home town is near to Gampaha. Nimalsiri Samaraweera's father used to live in Akaravita, who was sucessful businessman in Gampaha.
