In DECT, the Generic Access Profile (GAP) is the basic DECT profile and applies to all DECT portable and fixed parts that support the 3.1 kHz telephony service irrespective of the type of network accessed. It defines a minimum mandatory set of technical requirements to ensure interoperability between any DECT GAP fixed part and portable part. This profile has been established by ETSI as an important part of a set of DECT profiles. Every DECT device must support one or more profiles to be functional.
This GAP set consists of instructions for registering and deregistering handsets and making telephone calls. Extra handset functionality like caller ID, integrated voicemail functions, basestation programming and much more is not part of this set.
The purpose of GAP is to assure handsets and basestations from different makes can operate with each other at a minimum level.
