[edit] History
Before 1945 the city was part of Germany and was located in the Neumark region of Brandenburg. Since the Middle Ages it had been thoroughly German in population. In early 1945 it was heavily damaged by fighting between the Wehrmacht and the Red Army. After the end of the war, the city was handed over to Poland by the Allies and consequently the German population was expelled to Germany and replaced with Poles.
