From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Greymouth tornado was a major tornado which hit the town of Greymouth, New Zealand on 10 March 2005.
At 1:01pm a waterspout formed over the sea just west of Greymouth and made landfall in Blaketown. It quickly moved through Greymouth passing just south of the main town centre. Damage left by the tornado could be rated F1 or F2 on the fujita scale. An F2 tornado is a significant tornado which would indicate windspeeds of 150-200km/h.
This tornado is the largest of three tornados to hit the district since 2001 and the 7th damaging tornado reported in the West Coast region since 2000.
The tornado caused almost $10 million in damage and seriously injured 3 people, but despite the magnitude of the tornado no-one was killed.
