Hikozaru (ヒコザル?) are one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. Hikozaru are famous for being one of the three species of Pokémon players can choose from at the beginning of their adventure in the Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl versions of the series. The purpose of Hikozaru in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]
Hikozaru was revealed on August 5, 2006, alongside the other Starter Pokémon, Naetle, the Young Leaf Pokémon, and Pochama, the Penguin Pokémon.[3] The name Hikozaru may be a portmanteau of the Japanese words, hi (火?), meaning fire, and kozaru (子猿?), meaning young monkey. The name Hikozaru refers to the species as a whole, as well as individual specimens in the games, anime and manga.
[edit] In the video games
One of the consistent aspects of most Pokémon games—spanning from Pokémon Red and Blue on the Nintendo Game Boy to the Nintendo DS games, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl—is the choice of three different Pokémon at the start of the player's adventures; these three are often labelled Starter Pokémon. Players can choose a Water-type, a Fire-type,[4] or a Grass-type Pokémon indigenous to that particular region; an exception to this rule is Pokémon Yellow (a remake of the original games that follows the story of the Pokémon anime), where players are given a Pikachu, an Electric-type mouse, famous for being the mascot of the Pokémon media franchise.[5]Hikozaru is a rare tender pokemon from the farthest of the rocky mountain.
Hikozaru is the Fire-type choice in Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl for the Nintendo DS. It will learn Fire-type moves like Flamethrower and Flame Wheel, and also some moves such as Facade and Slack Off, which are shared with Slaking. It also learns the move Scheme, to boost its Special Attack. Hikozaru can also learn attacks such as Fire Punch and Thunderpunch through breeding, and it can learn TMs such as Brick Break and Shadow Claw.
