Homunculi of the Fullmetal Alchemist anime
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- This page describes the Fullmetal Alchemist Homunculi as they appear in the anime; for information on their appearances in the manga, see Homunculi of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga.
In the fictional Fullmetal Alchemist anime series, Homunculi are artificially generated beings, retaining human physical form and mental capabilities. However, they lack a soul, and their existence is replaced and replicated, to some slight degree, with the material created from an innumerable amount of souls called "philosopher's stones." Ruthless and determined, these beings serve as the principal villains of the Fullmetal Alchemist series. They are manipulative, pulling the strings from behind the scenes for much of history, and cutting them when they no longer serve a purpose.

[edit] General characteristics
Whether due to the loss of a loved one, malicious purpose or simply foolish curiosity, human transmutations are attempted; that is to say, the attempted resurrection of a dead person. Unfortunately, when these attempts backfire, a separate life is created. As Wrath says, "that is how the damned are born. That is a Homunculus!" On initial creation, Homunculi do not possess human features, but rather resemble hideous beings of decay; for example, organ piles and bones jutting out at odd angles in a horrific display. If left alone, they would remain in this deformed yet helpless state. By feeding on Philosopher's Stones, complete or otherwise, they gain the ability to take human shape, specifically the appearance of the human who they are an attempted resurrection of, as well as their regenerative and other special abilities. By consuming still more Philosopher's Stones, they can extend their lives indefinitely, though they are by no means immortal.
All Homunculi bear the mark of the Ouroboros, though the location of the tattoo varies from Homunculus to Homunculus. The winged serpent consuming its own tail represents the cycle of life and death through which the Homunculi constantly pass. This specific Ouroboros also features the Seal of Solomon, which depicts the unity of the alchemic symbols for fire and water (upwards and downwards triangles, respectively). In alchemy, the union of opposing elements is symbolic of both transmutation and the quest for the Philosopher's Stone. All Homunculi are also marked with several red circles on various parts of their bodies that are connected by a red line. The actual purpose of these markings is never specified, but it is believed that they are the control points for the red stones that are inside of their bodies. This theory is supported by several instances in both the anime and manga, for when Greed (manga) and Lust (anime) are pierced at these points, their abilities are disabled. However, the symbols could also be a sign of servitude.
Whereas the existence of a human being revolves around the soul, the existence of the Homunculi is sparked by the Philosopher's Stone(s) (in the manga they are genuine, but in the anime they are similar, but not identical, to the real Philosopher's Stone in alchemy) they carry within them. Due to the healing powers of the stone, Homunculi are endowed with amazing regenerative abilities, even to the point of allowing them to return from utter annihilation. This impressive ability, however, is fueled by the souls of the stone, and should their stones be depleted, their death is imminent. Another way to kill a Homunculus in the anime is to create a specific transmutation circle designed to seal a Homunculus's power; the only requirement for the transmutation to occur is a piece of the human whose attempted resurrection created the Homunculus (for example, Trisha Elric's remains for Sloth, or hair from Scar's brother's fiancée for Lust). Apart from their healing power, each Homunculus is gifted with a paranormal power, which manifests itself uniquely for each of the Homunculi (see their individual profiles for details).
Of the seven Homunculi present in the series, each is named after one of the seven deadly sins of Dante's Purgatorio: Lust, Gluttony, Envy, Pride, Sloth, Greed, and Wrath. As such, some of their personality and/or character traits are defined by the sin of which they are the embodiment. They are cruel sociopaths, as one would expect of incarnations of sin, although not incapable of questioning their nature or the validity of their existence.
Because they serve as an imitation of life, they are weakened by the presence of the real thing. When brought into close proximity with the remains of the person that was supposed to be resurrected, they are weakened (to the point of paralysis if too close). Because of this, Homunculi who have discovered their remains often keep them under lock and key, unable to personally destroy them and untrusting of others to do the deed for them. Homunculi are also unable to perform alchemy, as they come from the other side of the Gate, where the truth behind alchemy lies. The Homunculus Wrath is an exception, however, as he possesses human limbs (right arm and left leg, specifically) and was transmuted directly from the remains of the child he was modeled after. Thus, he is handicapped by neither of these defects–although he possesses paralyzing fears both of the Gate and of crying infants.
Due to the realization that they are mere imitations of human life, most Homunculi (except Greed and Envy, and possibly Pride), pursue the dream of one day becoming fully human, attaining a soul. To this end, they incessantly seek to create the Philosopher's Stone, although their personal inability to perform alchemy hinders them. As they are powered by incomplete philosopher's stones and crystallized red water, they seek the power of the true stone, and one who would grant them their one wish.
Though it is never specifically stated, the commonly accepted order of age (oldest to youngest) is Envy, Greed, Gluttony, Pride, Lust, Wrath, and Sloth. Though Wrath was created before Sloth, he wasn't initiated into the group until years later. Dialogue among some of the Homunculi (usually having to do with Greed) also indicates that there were previous incarnations of such Homunculi as Lust, Wrath and Sloth. For example, Envy tells Greed that the seven Homunculi have finally assembled "for the first time in a long time" - meaning that those Homunculi, all of whom have been created within the last ten years or so, must be new incarnations of previously created Homunculi with those names. Also, Lust tells Greed that she is "the new Lust."

Calm, collected, and sultry, Lust is the first Homunculus formally introduced in the series (although technically not the first witnessed by the Elrics, chronologically). Her main purpose amongst the Homunculi is gathering information and traveling abroad, manipulating alchemists into creating Philosopher's Stones (her work can be seen for what it truly is in her dealings with Cornello, Mugear, Lujon, and others). Gaining true humanity is the focal point of her ambition, arguably much more so than the rest of the Homunculi.
Lust's Homunculus power allows her to turn her fingernails or fingertips into razor sharp blades which can seemingly pierce through anything. She has also lashed out thin projectiles from her fingertips from time to time (which are never physically seen, but are depicted as a glimmering strand no thicker than the breadth of a strand of hair), although it is possible they are only her fingers in their traditional use. Her Ouroboros tattoo is located in the center of her chest, above her breasts.
Lust claims to have first observed the Elrics while she was evaluating the potential of the alchemist Majhal to create a Philosopher's Stone. While she was always in the background, using those like Cornello or Mugear, Lust only revealed herself to the Elrics years later during the events of the 5th Laboratory, where she attempted to convince Ed into creating a true Philosopher's Stone. Lust doesn't introduce herself or Gluttony by name to Edward until they met face to face again in Lior. Even then, she only introduces herself intending to kill Edward immediately after.
She is often directly involved in encouraging humans to seek out the Philosopher's Stone, using their desire for the stone to her advantage. Once baited, the alchemists are molded into following whatever path that best suits Lust and the other Homunculi's designs. She also tends to be more involved with the intrigue side of various conspiracies. Lust was created by Scar's brother, when he attempted to use alchemy to bring his lover back from the dead. After he was cast out from Ishbalan society as a heretic, Envy visited the wretched creature and fed it red stones, giving her human shape, and her new name. She was not the first Homunculus to bear the name of Lust, and is the third youngest Homunculus, with only Wrath and Sloth being younger.
While ruthless throughout most of the series, she changes near the end during the Liore incident as she begins to recover some memories of her life as a human, and she softens particularly towards Scar and the Elrics. But her involvement was reckless, and allowing the Elrics' escape–a locket containing strands of hair from the woman she "was" prevented her from action–raised doubts about her loyalty. Lust was taken to Dante, who gave her a chance to redeem herself by helping Wrath take out Edward while Sloth abducted Al. Realizing Dante's true intentions were never to make the Homunculi human, Lust betrays Wrath and forms an alliance with Edward, under the condition that he and Alphonse use the Philosopher's Stone to help her achieve her goal of becoming human. In return, she would reveal to the Elrics the identity of her master. Her desire was never fulfilled, however, as she battled Wrath when he arrived to save Sloth from the ambush Edward and Lust set up for her. Using the locket and the transmutation circle that Lust made for Edward to use on Sloth, Wrath first immobilizes, then kills her by transmuting his arm temporarily into a blade (making her the second Homunculus to die). Before her death, Lust wonders: where will she go when she dies? Is the true reason why she so desired to become human was so that she could find out?
She tends to show more compassion than the other Homunculi towards the end, such as being the only one to be disturbed when Dante used Rose's baby to open the gate.
Last Words: Maybe you are right. Where did I come from and where will I go when I die? Maybe all this time that is what I wanted: the freedom to find out.

(gurotony)
He is always eager to eat anything, or anyone, living or dead. The muscles in his jaws are also very powerful and his saliva is acidic, dissolving even the toughest metals to feed his ravenous appetite. He has the mentality of a child and has a very dependent nature, and has emotionally latched onto Lust and takes directions from her. Gluttony's Ouroboros tattoo was located on his tongue.
In the anime, he is old enough to have been familiar to Greed but young enough that he doesn't recognize Hohenheim. He is also physically very strong, with an agility disproportionate to his size, and is a powerful enough fighter to subdue a proficient martial artist like Al in seconds. Little is known of his past, though Dante said that Gluttony was created solely to make a Philosopher's Stone from those he consumed. After learning that Lust died, Gluttony is traumatized. Tired of hearing him cry over the fallen Lust, Dante transformed Gluttony into a mindless monster by transmuting the Ouroboros mark from his tongue.
Now devoted only to his boundless appetite, Dante directed him to eat Al to ensure the perfection of the Philosopher's Stone in his stomach. However, Gluttony fell victim to Al's alchemy, and his lower jaw dissolved. In the series, he was last seen trying to devour his master as she made a last-ditch effort to destroy her crazed creation, but Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa shows he survived Dante's alchemy attacks and had lived in the underground city ever since. It is presumed he ate Dante, but was hurt by her alchemy and fell down the shaft in the elevator, down to the hidden city. Having ingested much of the Philosopher's Stone, it is likely Gluttony became much more powerful than during most of the series, probably explaining how he underwent a massive physical transformation while living underground. When first encountered in the film, Gluttony has grown nearly ten times his original size and transformed into a hideous beast with massive jaws (his head had at first appeared unchanged, only a different eye color, until he sprung into action and attacked Wrath), enormous arms, used as support for walking (seeing as how his legs had apparently not changed at all), and four tendrils/heads sprouting from his back. While many of the ideas in Conqueror of Shamballa seem to confuse the perception of the Homunculi and the Gate even further for reasons unknown or considered irrelevant, it is likely that this form had resulted from Dante's final and (possibly) incomplete transmutation on him, or from self-inflicted alchemy using the power of the partially complete Philosopher's Stone in combination with Gluttony's own Homunculi characteristic abilities. Gluttony tries to devour Wrath when he and Al enter the city to open the Gate to the other world, but is trapped inside the Gate when Wrath sacrifices himself so that Al can transmute both he and Gluttony to open the portal.
Last Sane Words: Where is she? Where's Lust?
- Gluttony suffers from the sin of gluttony, always wanting something to eat
- Gluttony was created by Dante because she was gluttonous for power. Thus, he is a physical sin of Dante.

An effeminate figure with a dry wit, Envy has the ability to assume the form of any person and copy their voice. He uses attacks ranging from simple punches and kicks to capoeira-like techniques. Envy is most comfortable in the "adorable" form of a young androgynous human. Envy's most valued contribution(s) to the Homunculi's cause is impersonation, gathering information unnoticed, and using his ability to change form to carry out efficient assassinations. Envy's favored technique for murdering humans is to impersonate someone the target cares deeply for, and use their natural hesitation as the opportunity needed to kill them. His Ouroboros tattoo was located on his left thigh.
The oldest surviving Homunculus, Envy claims that he has forgotten what he originally looked like, but in truth chose not to revert to that form out of hatred for his "father" – Hohenheim–whom he resembled. He hates all humankind and follows Dante mostly for the opportunity of killing as many people as he can. This is what drives Envy in all that he does – unlike the other Homunculi serving Dante, Envy does not care about the Philosopher's Stone, nor about becoming human. His desire for revenge on his creator, and inflicting pain and suffering on all humans, is the only thing that matters. His most prominent murder was that of Mäes Hughes, whom he kills after taking on the form of his wife, Gracia. Envy was also key in imprisoning Greed, against whom he had a long-standing grudge, within the 5th Laboratory.
It is revealed in the penultimate episode that Envy was created four hundred years ago by Hohenheim in an attempt to resurrect the son he and Dante had (supposedly named 'William'), who had died from mercury poisoning when he was eighteen years old. Envy holds a great hatred toward Hohenheim for never being acknowledged as his son and for abandoning him and Dante. As a result, he also naturally hates his younger "half-brothers" Edward and Alphonse as they obtained the fatherly love that Envy himself never received. When learning from Dante that Hohenheim is gone, Envy snaps at being denied his wish to kill him. The fact that the Elrics possessed the stone and would gain back all that they had lost makes Envy more bent on making them suffer as he had. However, Edward manages to see through Envy's disguises and tricks until the Homunculus reveals his true form (an imitation of Hohenheim's deceased son with Dante) and his connection to Hohenheim. That stunt is all it takes for Envy to successfully kill Ed, though Al manages to revive him with the help of the Philosopher's Stone. Upon learning Hohenheim was still alive on the other side of the Gate, Envy – still obsessed with the thought of killing him – is able to successfully open and make his way through the doors. When inside the gate the creatures attack him, but he fights them off by transforming into Edward, and the person he was based on. By the time he makes his way through to the other side, Envy becomes a massive amphibious serpentine dragon (a reference to both the Leviathan as the sin of envy personified and the Ouroboros tattoo all Homunculi possess) in the process. His power of transformation is rendered inert as he arrives at the other side (since alchemy does not exist there), trapping him in his serpentine form forever.
During the two year gap between the end of the TV show and the movie, he is captured by the Thule Society, possibly with the help of Hohenheim. With Envy still trapped in his massive serpent form, the Society intends to use Envy as a literal Ourobouros to open a physical Gate and transfer their soldiers to the other side, to "Shamballa". Hohenheim is imprisoned and offered to Envy as a sacrifice; a human chew-toy to keep the "Great Snake" calm as they formulate their plans. Around the time of Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa, Envy escapes, and takes shelter in an abandoned castle only to cross paths with Edward once again. In their ensuing fight, Envy is attacked on all sides by the Thule Society, who recapture him and manage to get a small regiment of soldiers to the other side for a short time. Envy's exact intentions toward his "father" are unclear. In the end, it is Hohenheim who takes his own life using Envy as his means, enabling Ed to return to his own world in a final act of redemption for his sins. Thus, Envy is able to satiate his desire for vengeance on Hohenheim, albeit at the cost of being sent back into the Gate.
Last Words: (in human-form) Stop messing with me! You will do as I tell you! (transforms to Ed) You're taking me to see Hohenheim! To that bastard! (transforms to true form) To my father!
Last Words: (in dragon form) Still just a puppet, aren't you pipsqueak? (Note: Envy can speak as a dragon, but he cannot move his mouth in the form of human tongue).
- It should be noted that Envy was not actually killed, but merely transmuted by Hohenheim as the means to open the Gate. Thus, Envy is not techincally dead, merely trapped inside the Gate.
- It should be noted that in the Chibi OVA following the movie, Envy's personality becomes docile now that his vengeance has finally been served.
- After the death of Father Cornello early in the series, Lust confirms that Envy acted as the preacher for a time. While this in itself is unimportant, his first action after claiming to the people of the city that evil has been done while he was away on a journey was the reanimation of a flock of dead birds. The birds took flight, and shortly thereafter exploded, unnoticed by the masses. This being in one of the earlier episodes, it had yet to be revealed that Homunculi could not perform alchemy in the manga.
- Envy is a manifestation of envy and hatred for the Elrics.
- He is comically nicknamed "Palm Tree Head" by fans due to his dark green hair that sticks out like the leaves of a palm tree.
- Unlike in the series, Envy is gentle and cute in the "Chibi Party" OVA. He appears in dragon form, which was actually a suit he was wearing. Humorously, he is actually mistaken as a woman by some of the male characters.
- In the video game Dream Carnival, Lust claims that Envy loves chocolate parfaits. Envy denies this but blushes, which implies that Lust was telling the truth.

Sloth is the most recently created Homunculus in the anime. She assumed the identity of Colonel Juliet Douglas, a soldier who was said to have sparked the Ishbal War by killing an unarmed Ishbal child (yet mysteriously she supposedly died two years before the war had started. Because Maes Hughes found this out in the episode "Words of Farewell", he was murdered by the Homunculi to ensure the secret would never be revealed). Through manipulation and plotting with Pride, she became his secretary, serving as his emissary/executive assistant. Sloth is hydro-kinetic and is watery in composition (as all Homunculi powers match up with the laws of alchemy one can only assume that Sloth can control the color and pressure of her body or can perform some form of self-transmutation that converts her aqueous body into flesh and blood). This allows her to travel rapidly through water and use water-based techniques, such as drowning her victims with her limbs and making a spinning waterspout to attack. Sloth bears the tattoo of Ouroboros above her left breast.
Sloth was created by the Elric brothers when they tried to resurrect their mother, Trisha Elric, and was thus the first of the Homunculi encountered in the series, albeit in an unrecognizable (and apparently inhuman–she only appeared briefly in the first episode as a hideous skull-like face with red eyes) form. For this reason she looks exactly like her, which triggers painful memories for the Elric Brothers and Hohenheim. While abducting Al, Sloth revealed how she suffers from being haunted by the memories of her "life" as Trisha, revealing as she believed killing the Elric Brothers should stop the pain and ensure Sloth that she is more than a shadow of the woman she was modeled after. However, she became a motherly figure toward Wrath, whose love for her was Sloth's downfall.
After taking Al away from Shou Tucker, Sloth is fatally weakened by a small container of Trisha's remains, along with a transmutation circle Lust makes for Edward that causes Sloth to regurgitate the incomplete Stones within her. But it is Alphonse's hesitation (throwing the remains out the window) and Wrath's intervention (in which he absorbed Trisha's remains and physically battled Lust and the Elrics) that allowed her to survive, despite being severely weakened from the massive loss of her incomplete Stones. Sloth takes over Al's body briefly, until he and Ed were able to use another circle and freeze her solid. She manages to vibrate her molecules, thawing herself from her ice form, and leaves Al's armor behind. She reveals her intention to kill them, fighting Edward until Wrath arrives after killing Lust, refusing to let the Elrics kill her and choosing instead to use alchemy to combine with his "mother" despite her order to leave.
However, as Sloth and Edward explains, Wrath has forgotten that he'd absorbed the packet of Trisha's remains, thus immobilizing Sloth as well as himself. Taking advantage of this, Edward uses the knowledge gained from his earlier battle with Greed and causes a chain reaction that converts her body into ethanol, which then evaporated into the atmosphere much to Wrath's horror and anguish. Later, Envy states that he doesn't expect they'll be seeing her again.
Last Words: Nicely done sweetheart. Clean up after yourselves and take care of each other.
- Sloth's power, water, always takes the path of least resistance when flowing, and water is used in many other anime series to portray a lazy character.
- It should be noted that while a homunculus that loses all of their stones dies after being killed once, Sloth is "killed" numerous times by Lust yet still reforms even after Sloth's stones have been expelled. Later, she is completely destroyed by Ed, but still forms back, even without having stones.
- Sloth is a manifestation of the Elric brothers' sloth: feeling they could not go on without their mother there to take care of them.
- As a bit of irony, being a single mother and raising two children is actually very difficult, the exact opposite of the sin "sloth".

(gureedo) Calling himself the "Ultimate Shield", he is able to make himself impervious to harm by rearranging the bonds between the carbon atoms in his body and changing his skin into an unnamed carbon-based substance (presumably black diamond), giving him the appearance of a black-skinned demon while in his true form. In terms of attitude Greed carries himself as a rather slick character, a ladies' man and all-around arrogant fellow. His Ouroboros crest is on the back of his left hand.
Greed is the second oldest of the Homunculi at the time of the story, younger than Envy. He was created by Dante through an attempted human transmutation of one of her former lovers. Greed and Envy became bitter rivals, probably due to their connections to Dante. At some point in Greed's past, he disobeyed and betrayed Dante and the other Homunculi in some matter. For this, Greed was sealed away in the 5th Laboratory by Envy. The seal that imprisoned Greed was maintained by the skull of the man Greed himself was created from; as remains of the original body paralyze a Homunculus, this prevented Greed from simply using his great strength to break free.
Eventually, that skull was jarred loose by the explosion caused by Barry the Chopper in his attempt to escape from Al and Scar. The seal was further broken in a fight between Scar and Gluttony. Thus Greed was set free. He attempted to recruit Wrath as an ally, but failed. He then abducted Al so he could gain more knowledge on soul transmutation. He claimed he wanted to be immortal so that he could enjoy the fruits of his avarice, but it's possible that Greed was seeking a way to rid himself of what he saw as his one weakness (his body) so that he could not be sealed again. It's possible as well that Greed may have been interested in using soul attachment as a way to become human, which appears to be a subconscious urge common to almost all Homunculi. One final possibility exists that Greed wished to know the mechanics of soul transmutation so he could kill Dante.
The abduction occurred in front of Dante, who was held at knifepoint by Greed's followers, who probably did not know who she was. Greed continued to operate out of the Devil's Nest until Kimblee betrayed them, handing over the skull previously used to imprison him to the State Military officer Frank Archer. With two of his closest friends (Roa and Dorchette) killed by Lust and Gluttony during his escape, and seeing his chances for freedom slipping away, Greed decided to wager all he had left and confront Dante. It is unclear if Greed intended to fight Dante, or to beg her forgiveness. Dante, however, had made it appear that Lyra had killed her, stunning Greed long enough for Dante (now incarnated in Lyra) to activate a Flamel array to seal Greed away for good. Dante was in possession of Greed's remains besides the skull, which had their characteristic effect on Greed. Greed somehow gathered the strength to escape but he had already vomited out all the incomplete Philosopher's Stones inside his body, further weakening him for the ensuing fight with Edward.
Knowing that the only possible outcome was to be captured and sealed once more, Greed chose instead to die fighting Edward, confiding in him the secret to defeating Homunculi. Thusly, Greed deliberately does not tell Ed that he has let Al go, or that he had nothing to do with the "death" of Dante. After a prolonged fight, Ed stabbed him through the heart after transmuting away his shield; Greed had assumed that his shield could not be penetrated. As he lay dying, Greed revealed to Ed the true weaknesses of his Homunculi brethren (that when confronted with remnants of the human they were intended to be, all their power dissipates and they are paralyzed, and vulnerable to sealing) and encourages Ed to defeat the others. Greed dies in a rather peculiar series of flinches, but Ed thinks he is not dead. It then dawns on Ed that the Homunculus is dead, and Ed breaks down in tears, as he has never killed anyone before. The fact that Greed acted so much more human than the other Homunculi made it difficult for Ed to accept his death, but Greed's advice and the lessons he had learned in Dublith would eventually prepare Ed for the battles with Sloth and Envy.
Greed's history with Dante is revealed in the Fullmetal Alchemist OVA Reflections. In a narration-form conversation that Envy and Greed have in regards to their past with Dante, Envy reveals that Greed, in his human life, was in love with her. Greed denies such a thing, having been purged of his human memories long ago, to which Envy responds with implications that Dante murdered Greed's human self and brought him back as a homunculus for the sole purpose of testing whether his human love--and perhaps resentment--towards her would have an effect on whether or not she could control him as a homunculus. Greed's fervent rejection of this idea reflects upon how true a story it must be: Envy adds that this is the true reason why Greed rebelled against Dante and threw himself into personifying his own sin; subconsciously, he can't handle the fact of Dante's betrayal.
Further evidence of remnants of Greed's human attachment to her: After his escape from the 5th Laboratory, he resided very close to where he knew she lived. He made no attempt on her life, even when his followers attacked inside her house to capture Al. While dying, he said nothing of Dante to Ed and seemed to be only interested in revenge against the Homunculi, yet he continued to refer to Dante as "the bitch" or "hag".
Last Words: I'm greedy as hell, only out for myself. She always said it would be the death of me. [The Homunculi] pull the strings... now cut them. I'm counting on you, kid.
- It should be noted that in the movie, "Conqueror of Shamballa," Heiderich's partners in his rocketry project look very much like blonde, blue-eyed versions of Greed, Loa, Dorchet, and Bido (the lizard-chimera who harassed Ed and Al in Chapter 25 of the manga.)
- Greed is greedy in that even though he is almost immortal as a homunculus, he wishes to become truly unkillable. He also wants "all the world's selling" including women, money, and status

In the anime, Wrath is the second youngest Homunculus. With the appearance of a seven to eleven year-old child, he has the ability to fuse his body's form with other objects, whether or not the objects are organic. He possesses the exceptional ability to perform alchemy (unlike the other Homunculi), and is unique even among most alchemists in that he can transmute without a transmutation circle. He can do this because of his right arm and left leg, which originally belonged to Edward Elric (who lost the limbs in an attempt to bring his mother back to life, which resulted in Sloth, and in affixing his brother's soul to a suit of armor). In one instance, Wrath accidentally fused himself to the bed on which he was lying, combining his organic form with that of the bed's wooden frame and cloth sheets. Later he was able to fuse himself with Sloth.
He has the ability to stretch his Homunculus limbs to great lengths, at which time his limbs take on a blue color, and appear similar to a large mass of muscle fibers. Wrath's alchemy stems from the fact that his limbs were once part of a being with a soul who never died (i.e., Ed). However, as they are only a small part of the being, his alchemy must, like the alchemy-like powers of the other Homunculi, be focused around himself. He has performed transmutations on other objects without fusing himself, such as when he mirrored Ed's trademark lance, but these transmutations are simple. More complex alchemy requires him to fuse himself with the object or fuse with the transmutation circle itself, as he did when he activated the Flamel array he used to make Lust vomit up her red stone.
However, Wrath lacks the ability to create such stones for himself. Wrath is also one of the few Homunculi who ages, growing from a deformed baby to a child in the series and from a child to a young teenager in Conqueror of Shamballa. Wrath's tattoo is on the sole of his right foot. Wrath was created when Izumi Curtis attempted to transmute her dead child on Yock Island. The result was a Homunculus with its typical inhuman appearance when immature. Izumi sent it back into the Gate where Wrath remained, aging there in the process. When Edward attempted to revive his mother, Wrath took possession of his lost limbs within the gate. The limbs eventually gave Wrath the power to force open the gate and come back to Yok Island where he lived until he was discovered. After being discovered by the Elrics on the island, he was taken to the house of Izumi Curtis. He eventually ran away and his existence became known to Envy, the military, and Greed.
Envy eventually made contact with Wrath and provided him with incomplete Philosopher’s Stones. On consuming the stones, Wrath became a mature Homunculus. The stones' power and Envy's words changed his demeanor from that of an innocent child's to the total incarnation of his cardinal sin, full of raw hatred and anger--especially at his master for creating him. Wrath was encouraged by Envy to hate Edward and attempted to take his body, so that he could absorb it and become completely human (but without a soul of his own Wrath would only be as human as Pride).
Unlike the other Homunculi, Wrath was created directly from the materials of the human that was being transmuted. Because of this, Wrath did not share the weakness of the other Homunculi because the remains of the original body no longer existed. However, Wrath had other weaknesses: a deep and paralyzing phobia at the sound of a wailing baby and that of the Gate itself. The human nature of his arm and leg were also a weakness. Although Wrath was affectionate towards Izumi at first, after meeting Envy, and typical of the other Homunculi, Wrath rejected his creator. He eventually adopted Sloth as his mother, probably as part of a delusion that he could become Edward by taking things that belonged to him. After Sloth's death, Wrath was inconsolable, and started talking about using the Philosopher's Stone to revive her.
However, Dante had Envy beat Wrath for it and the fearful child finally came to understand the truth about his relations to them. Wrath then attempted to revive Sloth himself, forcing Dante to summon the Gate, which dragged in the human parts of Wrath before Edward emerged from it. This is similar to the punishment described in Dante's Inferno for the sin of Wrath: being dismembered alive. Wrath could not replace his human limbs with non-human ones, presumably because his original arm and leg sank into his body when he absorbed the human limbs, which were susceptible to prolonged injury. Winry eventually fitted Wrath with automail similar to Edward's.
His whereabouts for the next two years are unknown, though he did resurface to visit his creator's tomb, but appears as a shell of his former self: likely because he has no red stones to consume and accepting who he was after the events of the finale. He guided Alphonse Elric through the underground city to find and open the Gate. Gluttony, now a huge and mindless monster ravenous with hunger, attacked, attempting to devour Wrath. After Gluttony expels some red stone material, Wrath consumes it and regains considerable strength. With his new power, Wrath is able to hold Gluttony off for a short while, but then purposefully smashes his own automail in the center of a Gate opening transmutation circle, allowing Gluttony to take him into his jaws. Gluttony proceeds to bite Wrath in half. He then screams for Al to use both he and Gluttony as Equivalent Exchange to open the portal.
Al is wary of sacrificing Wrath, but is assured by the Homunculus that this was the very reason he brought Al there in the first place. Al forcefully carries out his request and transmutes the Gate, destroying both Wrath and Gluttony in the process. Upon his redemption, Wrath–in his untainted form with all limbs–is seen standing in front of the doors of the Gate, which open with Izumi there to greet him. Reunited at last, the two disappear into the hereafter together.
Last Words: Do it... Transmute us both... then the gate will open... to take us back... Thats why I came here with you. I know you're planning to offer your own life as the price for saving your brother. I don't ever want to see that happen. Never again! Please... I just want to go home...where mommy is.(Gets nearly bitten in half by the monster Gluttony) Ahhh!! Now!!!!
- Wrath is the embodiment of his namesake. He hates almost everyone and everything. He hates Izumi for creating him, Ed for giving him "only a taste of humanity", Lust for attacking Sloth, and whomever he encounters.
- Unlike in the series, Wrath holds a parental rivalry with Izumi in the "Chibi Party" OVA. He and Izumi can be seen scolding each other in the background.

Created by Dante, Pride is secretly King Bradley, the political and military ruler of Amestris holding the official title of President, also called "Führer" (Note that "King" is Pride's human first name -- President or Führer are the titles). He controls the country and directs its military in secret to further her ends. His true identity was discovered when Martel tore off his eyepatch after listening to his plans to start a war with Lior. His Ouroboros tattoo is on his left eye, which Pride covers with his eye patch. This "Ultimate Eye" gives him the foresight to see all possible outcomes of a given situation, allowing him to predict the moves of any opponent before they happen. His favored mode of attack is with his sword, which he wields with alarming accuracy thanks to his unique gifts. Dante considers Pride her finest creation–the only Homunculus she created who could appear to age like a normal human (although Wrath, created by Izumi, apparently shares this ability to some extent). Pride is younger than Envy, Greed, and possibly Gluttony while he is older than Sloth, Wrath and Lust. A comment from Greed during Fullmetal Alchemist: Reflections indicates that Pride (or a previous Pride) was the last Homunculus born prior to Greed's imprisonment, but this comment would create a discrepancy between this and his aging as a normal human. Adding to the confusion is Greed's comment about "Envy, Pride, and the others" which implies that Greed was aware of Pride's existence or unaware of a former Pride's death. One possible explanation of this discrepancy is that Pride can appear to age like a human, but not actually undergo the normal aging process himself, like Envy can appear to age if he wants to, but Pride's method is more refined and subtle than Envy's. Another possibility is that Dante can reverse Pride's aging through alchemy, possibly with the aid of the Philosopher's Stone, in order to periodically have Pride "die" and be reborn so as not to arouse suspicion.
Physically aging enables Pride to live among humans and even start a family of his own, with an adopted son named Selim (sometimes translated as Salem), whose windpipe he crushes when the boy inadvertently gave Roy Mustang an advantage against him: what Selim thought to be his father's most prized possession was actually the skull of the man Pride was created from, and thus Pride's weakness. With the skull in hand Roy was able to repeatedly incinerate Pride with his alchemic flames, until at length Pride's regenerative powers were depleted and he died. (An interesting side note is that a flashback scene has Pride holding the wrapped skull before placing it in his wall safe. This makes him the only Homunculi capable of touching the remains of the person he was created from and not be affected by it. [Lust and Sloth are both paralyzed when objects containing their respective remains are placed near them])
As head of the Military, Pride (under the alias of King Bradley) ruled Amestris with absolute power, though just what kind of ruler he was differs depending on the translation. In the English dub Pride appears relatively benign (in public) and seems to have the people's general support. This is supported by a conversation between Edward Elric and Roy Mustang in the episode "Goodbye", in which Ed states that if Mustang killed Bradley the people would hate him and he'd never become Führer himself. In the original Japanese Ed says that if Mustang had stayed obedient and eventually became Führer in a more orthodox way (probably after Pride's passing, assuming he can die, or appear to die, of old age) the people would hate him, and he would never be able to use his power for reform.
The name Führer yet again parallels to the real life world and its time frame. "Führer" was the title Adolf Hitler gave himself when he rose to power in pre-World War II Germany, which is about the time in the real world while King Bradley is ruling the military. (There is about a fifteen-year difference. Hitler came to power in 1933, while most of the show takes place in the 1910s, except the last episode, which ends in 1921.). They even look a bit similar.
Last Words: You are foolish, all of you. Even my own son.
- Pride is the embodiment of Dante's Pride, as she considers him her greatest creation; the best homunculous. This is shown in Laws and Promises as after both Gluttony and Envy cannot stop Al from reviving Ed, she goes to Pride's office so that he could "teach them a lesson", implying that he alone could defeat the Elric brothers.

[edit] Homunculi in Order of Death
Homunculus Name - Episode of Death - Cause of Death
- Greed (Episode 34: Theory of Avarice) - Sealed by Dante (in Lyra's body), and then stabbed by Ed.
- Lust (Episode 47: Sealing the Homunculus) - Sealed and killed by Wrath.
- Sloth (Episode 48: Goodbye) - Transformed into ethanol by Ed. (Since Wrath inserted Ed and Al's mother's remains into himself and then merged with Sloth, it is assumed that when Ed turned her into ethanol, the remains were mixed into her thus stopping her regeneration)
- Pride (Episode 51) - Incinerated by Roy Mustang.
- Wrath (Conqueror of Shamballa) - Bitten in half by Gluttony and transmuted by Al to open the Gate.
- Gluttony (Conqueror of Shamballa) - Transmuted by Al alongside Wrath to open the Gate. Not actually dead, merely sent back into the Gate.
