James Penton, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta; Canada.
Born in April 1932 Mr Penton was raised as a 3rd generation Jehovahs Witness. However he gradually came to disagree with the teachings of the religion during the 1970's and was eventually excommunicated or disfellowshipped. While still a member of the religion he wrote a book entitled "The History of Jehovahs Witnesses in Canada" which has been widely regarded outside the organization (and untill his expulsion within the organization) as an excellent account of the Canadian history of Jehovahs Witnesses.
Since leaving the organization he has authored at least two more books, edited two journals and written five articles about the Jehovahs Witnesses. The first book was is titled "Apocalypse Delayed: The Story of Jehovah's Witnesses" and recently a new one called "Jehovah's Witnesses and the Third Reich: Sectarian Politics under Persecution." has been published.
