The Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology or KAIST (IPA: /kaɪst/ in RP and GenAm) is an institute of higher learning in Daedeok Science Town (Hangul: 대덕연구단지; Hanja: 大德硏究團地), Daejeon, South Korea.
Established in 1981 through the amalgamation of Korea Advanced Institute of Science (KAIS) with Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) by the KAIST Law (Law No. 3778; new foundation of the university for the establishment of the bachelor's program), it has currently 7,000 students and 800 teaching staff.
KAIST is the only university in Korea that is controlled by the Ministry of Science and Technology instead of the Ministry of Education. The Institute's purpose is to provide highly qualified scientists and engineers, to perform mid- to long-term basic and applied research, and to provide a research platform for other institutions. It is generally regarded among Koreans as the most prestigious science and technology institute in the country. Its graduates have played a major role in making the nation into a net exporter of high-technology goods over the past few decades. It routinely recruits gifted sophomores of South Korean science high schools.
According to evaluation by Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), “KAIST, the best university in Korea, is considered to be comparable to that of the top 10% of U.S universities.” (“KAIST Facts,” 2002). It's next goal is to build a global reputation as one of the finest science and technology institutes in the world.
The university is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia.
