NorthPark Center

NorthPark Center is an upscale shopping mall located in north Dallas, Texas (USA) with over 120 stores and anchors. The mall is located at the intersection of Loop 12 (Northwest Highway) and US 75 (North Central Expressway).

Opened in 1965, it is the oldest enclosed shopping mall still in operation in Dallas, and one of the very few major malls in the United States not fully owned by a major shopping mall development company. When the mall first opened, it held the distinction of being the largest climate-controlled retail establishment in the world.^[1] Ownership of NorthPark is shared equally by the NorthPark Development Company, which is owned by the family of Raymond Nasher, the mall's original developer, and by The Macerich Company, a California-based real estate investment trust. The Nasher family sold half of its interest in NorthPark in 2004 to help finance a two-year expansion project that more than doubled the square footage of the mall.

From the start, selections from Nasher's collection of 20th Century sculpture and modern art have been rotated throughout the mall, introducing visitors to impressive works by Jonathan Borofsky, Andy Warhol, Henry Moore, Roy Lichtenstein and Frank Stella, among others. NorthPark received the American Institute of Architects Award for "Design of the Decade - 1960's" as one of the first commercial centers in the U.S. to create space for the display of fine art. NorthPark was honored again in 1992 with the A.I.A.'s 25-Year Award for Design Excellence.

Despite its age and its simple construction (through its various renovations and expansions NorthPark has retained a simple polished concrete floor, white brick exterior, and clear glass windows) it has maintained its popularity and has not suffered the dead mall fate of others its age; it has constantly renovated itself to attract and maintain the nearby residents of North Dallas and the nearby Park Cities, who are among the most affluent in Dallas. A recent $170 million renovation increased NorthPark's size to over 2 million square feet, making it the largest mall in Dallas (slightly larger than Galleria Dallas, its chief competitor for the upscale shoppers for which both malls compete) and turned its original "U" shape into a unique "square" design. The inside of the square, though, has not been crammed with more retail space – though the mall could easily support it – but has been transformed into a large, 1.3 acre central garden featuring trees, landscaping, and the art for which NorthPark has become famous.
