Old black
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Old Black" is a Gibson 1953 Les Paul Goldtop guitar. (named after its designer) It has been customized quite considerably: after being left at a guitar repair store, it was fitted with a Gibson Mini Humbucker, such as those found on aGibson Firebird, at the bridge, and a P-90 at the neck. It was resprayed to jet black, and received a new Tune-O-Matic bridge (not available when the guitar was produced) and a Bigsby vibrato tailpiece. It would also presumably have at some point had a white plastic pickguard, as was standard on 1953 Goldtops, although now it has a worn metallic one, to match the rest of the hardware on the guitar.
"Old Black" is the main electric guitar used by rock musician, Neil Young. He received it a trade with then Buffalo Springfield partner Stephen Stills for his Gretsch White Falcon that he had used exclusively up to that point. Most of Young's electric guitar parts have been recorded on "Old Black," (with the notable exception of the Ditch Triolgythough some were played on Gretsch Falcons and Nashvilles, as well as Fender Telecasters, and other, newer Goldtops.
