Hi, I'm Paul Baumstarck, an EE grad student at Stanford University (fear the Quals).
[edit] Math Style
So I've taken to writing sums of the form,
as:
Similarly,
Since it's less writing (my hand doesn't have to go all the way up to the top of the summation sign to write the upper limit) and I get to write more blackboard bold characters which are much cooler than all other characters. I'm just wondering whether that's "correct" to write that and, if so, which do people prefer? Paulb42 01:39, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "max" and "min" = boring
Seriously, would you rather be writing "SUM" and "PROD" everywhere in your functions or giant sigma's and pi's? Right, that's what I thought. So why do we write "max" and "min" instead of some cool symbol for both? And, on top of that, using explicit English to name functions is only opening the door for, oh, I don't know, say, the Chinese to takeover math and start using things like "最高 over 全 i in 现" or something. Best to stay completely symbolic and not dabble in any language at all.
So here are some suggested replacements for "max" and "min":
Now how to get rid of that ugly "arg" ...
