General Thayer's personal philosophy and methods remain core values at Thayer Academy, as exemplified by the school's motto, "Duty, Honor, Country." Thayer has been co-educational since its founding in 1877. Graduates have gone on to achieve success and fame in every area: the arts, science, politics, the military, as humanitarians and Olympic athletes.
Athletically, Thayer Academy participates in the competitive Independent School League.
The Visiting Committee evaluating Thayer in 1998 for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges wrote, "Thayer devotes itself to high ideals. The committee came away feeling Thayer deserves to celebrate a unique spirit of democracy, a strikingly vigorous community life, and the potential for remarkable future development...It is extraordinarily well poised for the 21st century."
Thayer Academy is also home to a private middle school for grades 6-8. The high school and middle school are referred to individually simply as "The Upper School" and "The Middle School."
