[edit] Plot introduction
With their mother ill and their father permanently drunk, Hari and Lila have to earn the money to keep house and look after their two young sisters. In desperation, Hari runs away to Bombay to find work and Lila is left to cope alone. All along the novel, the characters have to face difficulties such as travelling, where to sleep and how to earn money even if it was just enough to survive. The novel focuses on issues such as poverty, industrialisation, dysfunctional families, and not forgetting the love that binds the family.
[edit] TV Series
The novel was the basis for the 1991 television series of the same name starring Saeed Jaffrey. [1]
