The World Today is a flagship current affairs news programme produced by BBC World the BBC's global news and current affairs television channel, and broadcast daily in a simulcast with BBC News 24 in the United Kingdom. It has been on air in different formats since 1994.
The programme was originally broadcast several times a day, but disappeared from screens in 1999 at the time of the BBC News relaunch, which also encompassed BBC World. Since 2001, it has been broadcast once a day as a new European breakfast programme, with news, sport and a half hour edition of World Business Report.
[edit] Presenters
The new programme was presented by Martine Dennis and Tanya Beckett. Tanya left the programme in late 2002, and was replaced by Sally Bundock, still the main business presenter. Martine Dennis moved to the morning 'daytime' slot on BBC World in 2003, and was replaced by David Eades as main presenter. In 2006, David Eades left the Monday to Thursday programme and was replaced by Lucy Hockings. He currently presents the late morning 'daytime' slot on BBC World, but still presents the Friday edition with Jamie Robertson. The programme also used to be presented by Anita McNaught on Fridays, but she also left the slot in 2003, and since then there has been no second presenter of the programme, and if Lucy Hockings is not presenting, it can be any member of the BBC World team. Martine Dennis still presents the programme and Kirsty Lang, David Jessel, Mike Embley or Lindsey Brancher have been known to step in.
