Toby Atwell

Maurice Dailey (Toby) Atwell (March 8, 1924 - January 25, 2003) was a catcher in Major League Baseball who played for the Chicago Cubs (1952-1953), Pittsburgh Pirates (1953-1956) and Milwaukee Braves (1956). Atwell batted left handed and threw right handed. He was born in Leesburg, Virginia.

A strong defensive catcher, Atwill shortened his major league career when he hurt his knee sliding while playing for Triple-A Montreal in 1949 (International League). His most productive season came in his rookie year with the Cubs, when he posted career-highs in batting average (.290), RBI (31), runs (36), hits (105), doubles (16), games played (107), as he was selected to the National League All-Star team.
In a five-season major league career, Atwell was a .260 hitter with nine home runs and 110 RBI in 378 games.
Atwell died in Purcellville, Virginia, at age of 78.
