[edit] Structure

[edit] Article Naming Convention

Attention - no articles shall be renamed until the State route naming conventions poll has been completed and the go-ahead is given for move of articles to the name decided upon. See the poll page for an approximate status and schedule.

The contents of each article in this project should reside in Wisconsin Highway XXX, with XXX being the route number (no leading zeros); also, Wisconsin State Highway XXX and WIS-XXX and Highway xxx (Wisconsin) should redirect to the article as well.

Provide a brief introduction to the route. Highlight any points of interest that are accessible by the route

Termini
Detail the termini of the highway including Exit Number of crossroad, city, features.

Municipalities served by Highway ##
List major Municipalities directly accessed by this route

History
A historical synopsis on the highway

Current Status
What is happening on the route right now - Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) and Chris Bessert's guide to Wisconsin Highways provide good amounts of detail about routes.

Future plans
list any possible plans for evolution of the highway here

[edit] Hierarchy definition

No classification of this project has been defined.

[edit] Goals

  1. Create Wisconsin State Highway articles listed in List of Wisconsin numbered highways that are red-linked.
  2. Expand any existing articles with pertinent information
  3. Standardize all articles according to the layout described in this project page

[edit] Tasks

/Completion list - This list shows all the redirect links for each of the routes.

  1. Request a stub category and link the template for it.
  2. Attach project template to talk pages of existing highway articles
  3. Create remaining articles - all active and known decomissioned routes have been created at minimum as stubs.
  4. Peer review of existing articles with suggestions.
  5. link up with U.S. Roads and Wisconsin Wikiprojects
  6. Create svg images for the County Highway signs - Due to the structure - I do not see each route getting any articles, but the sign images will complement State, U.S. and Interstate route articles nicely. The standard U.S. County route sign will not comply with this project.
    1. Single Letter county route markers have been created. image name is as follows Image:WIS County L.svg (replace "L" with your favorite letter. If you need any others let SPUI know, and if possible provide a photo or specify the font series that WisDOT uses.
  7. Make map images depicting each route.
  8. Insert properly licensed photographs into articles to give them "visual flavor"
  9. Research unknown former routes (those that remain red-linked in the /Completion list)
  10. Create state level articles for Interstates and U.S. Routes.

[edit] Infoboxes

The Infobox to use for this project is the Template:Infobox road template.

This is the basic syntax you need to get a complete routebox on the article page, just place this before any other text and fill in the variables.

State Trunk Highway 29
Length: 289.11 mi[1] (465.28 km)
West end: US 10 in Prescott
Major
junctions:
WIS 25 in Menomonie
US 53 in Chippewa Falls
US 51 in Wausau
WIS 22 near Shawano
US 41 in Green Bay
East end: WIS 42 in Kewaunee
Wisconsin highways
< WIS 28 WIS 30 >
County - Bannered - Rustic

For the above paramaters here's what you should fill in:

  • state: This should be WI
  • type: This should be WIS which is what Wisconsin prefaces their route names with, i.e. WIS-50
  • route: This is the number of the route the article is about
  • alternate_name: if the route is assigned an additional name, include it here.
  • map: This is the Image Wiki for the map. This function is not used as of yet on Wisconsin articles as no maps have been made.
  • length_mi: This is the length of the route in miles. If you specifiy beyond integers (i.e. add a decimal value) you will need to set the following paramater, length_round
  • length_round: If your value for length_mi is a whole number, you can omit this. Otherwise it needs to be set to the decimal precision of the length_mi paramater.
  • length_ref: To do what a good article writer should, provide your reference for the length of the route using standard
  • established: This is the date the route was commissioned
  • direction_a: This should be either south or west to keep in accordance with the U.S. Roads parent project, which lists termini and junctions in progression travelling from West to East and South to North.
  • starting_terminus: This is where the route begins and is either at the southern terminus or western terminus.
  • junction: Any major junctions along the route should be listed here. If more than one is listed, use a <br> to break the lines
    • Only major junctions go into the Interstate routebox... these would be Interstates, U.S. Highways and and other major state highways/roads. Otherwise the routebox becomes way too big.
    • For multiple highways near a city either:
      1. List them together on the same line by city OR
      2. Omit minor highway junctions (preferred)
    • Of course the terminii would always be there.
    • If any routebox has over 10 or so junctions, then some of the junctions need to be removed.
    • The only time a county route would be mentioned is if it is a terminus (there are at least three instances of that so far).
  • direction_b: The opposite of direction_a
  • ending_terminus: where the route ends, in accordance with the guidelines set forth with starting_terminus
  • previous_type: This is the type of route that preceeds the current one in the system. The value for this is usually: Interstate, US, or WIS for Interstates, U.S. Routes and other Wisconsin Highways, respectively.
  • previous_route: The number of the route preceeding this one
  • next_type: Same as previous_type but for the route following this one
  • next_route: The number of the route succeeding this one

Important notes regarding the routebox: For the previous and next route types, remember to list them in order of priority. If you do an infobox for WIS-93, the following route would be I-94 not WIS-94. WIS-94 would succeed I-94 as there is no U.S. 94 in Wisconsin. The precedence is as follows: U.S. Interstate, U.S. Route, Wisconsin Highway.

So, by completing the infobox as follows, you'll get a routebox like the one to the right.

[edit] Browse Template

If a route is decommissioned, it still needs a browse box at the bottom of the article.

start srbox

end box

will create something like

Browse numbered routes
< WIS 21 WI WIS 23 >

Replace previous and next type with "US" or "Interstate" if and only if the previous or next route is not a Wisconsin state highway. If the previous or next route is a U.S. Route, _type=US if it is an interstate, type=Interstate

This box should only be placed on pages that do not have an infobox, or are an article for a Interstate or U.S. Route in the Wisconsin Highway system. On pages where a browse box already exists, you can omit the start and end templates, and just insert the wi browse, keeping the list in alphabetical order. For an example, see the browse box at U.S. Route 1 at the bottom of the article.
