[edit] Story
Koko was a warm hearted person and Sherry Bellmont's best friend when she was young. Though Koko grew up in poverty and lived on the streets and Sherry grew up in a world of privilege, they vowed that some day they would both find happiness in life. As they grew older, though, both Koko and Sherry continued to live separate lives, but remained friends. When Koko was finally accepted at a college, a mysterious mamodo named Zofis showed up and offered to help her get revenge on the city that she suffered in. The once-kind Koko unwittingly teamed up with Zofis who used his magic and powers to manipulate and control Koko's mind and transform her once warm heart into a cold one. Zofis made Koko believe that she must help him find and destroy Sherry. Sherry's main purpose now is to find Koko and defeat Zofis, so Koko can be released from Zofis' mind control powers and turn back into the friend that Sherry once knew.
When Zofis tries to get Zatch and Kiyo Takamine (Kiyomaro Takamine) to join him, he wears a mask and calls himself Milordo-Z (simply Lord in Japanese). He also shows that he can control other people with his powers when he controls Suzy to talk to Kiyo. He used brainwashed people to have them control three Millennium Mamodos he recently freed.
He recruits Byonko, Penny and Uri to their side and Zofis released more Millennium Mamodos to wipe out all the present mamodo so that he would become king.
Zofis seems to have an undeterminable gender. Many fansubs tend to alternate between "he " and "she". The reason for this gender confusion is that the Japanese language does not have specific pronouns related to gender. The English manga also tends to switch between "he" and "she", possibly showing that there have been some translation problems. In a recent interview, Makoto Raiku has confirmed that Zofis was always intended to be male. In the English dub of Zatch Bell!, Zofis is referred to as male.
In the original Japanese version, Koko is played by Chinami Nishimura while Zofis is played by Toshiko Fujita. In the Viz Media English dub, Koko is played by Lara Jill Miller while Zofis is played by Susan Silo.
