There are a lot of written stories about Star Trek, too. But the Paramount Studios does not accept them. So there are small and big things that aren't the same between "official Star Trek" and some of the written Star Trek stories.
[edit] Idea of Star Trek
The idea of Star Trek is, that after mankind nearly killed itself completely in a World War III or IV (the original stories were written in time of the Cold War), a genius man invented a possibility to travel with speeds greater than the speed of light ("warp technology"). As result of this invention mankind has contact with extraterrestrial (from other worlds) species. This part of the story (compare "Star Trek VIII - movie" takes place in the second half of the 21st century. In the 22nd century mankind, Vulcans and a lot of other species from other planets start the United Federation of Planets, often called just the Federation.
The original series of Star Trek is the story of the starship Enterprise under the command of Captain James T. Kirk (played by William Shatner) and his half Human half Vulcan (other species) first officer Commander Spock (played by Leonard Nimoy) in the 23rd century. The Enterprise travels through the Milky Way and meets a lot of strange cultures and the main characters (Kirk, Spock, Leonard McCoy (played by De Forrest Kelley, M.D., Lt. Uhura and the genius engineer Montgomery Scott, called "Scotty", are often in danger.
More than 20 years after this first series "Star Trek: Next Generation" started. The new starship Enterprise D under Captain Jean-luc Picard (played by Patrick Stewart), his first officer Commander William T. Riker]] (played by Jonathan Frakes), Beverly Crusher, M.D., Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge, Lt. Cmdr. Data, an android, and Lieutenant Worf, a Klingon, are the main members of the crew. The stories take place in the 24th century. Often Star Trek correlates with political developments in the time the stories were filmed. So Star Trek VI shows the end of the conflict between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, similar to the end of the Cold War.
There were two more series taken place in the 24th century, but after the time of "Next Generation":
- "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" takes place on a space station near the planet Bajor. The Commander is Benjamin Sisko.
- "Star Trek: Voyager", tells the story of the starship Voyager which is sent to the other end of the galaxy by an accident and tries to go home to the Federation. The main members of the crew are Captain Kathryn Janeway, Commander Chakotay, the holographic doctor, Seven of Nine, a former Borg, Neelix, and Tuvok.
A few years later, there was such another Star Trek series taking place in the time before Captain Kirk; Enterprise. This is in conflict to the Star Trek story as known before. Main characters are Captain Jonathan Archer, Subcommander T'Pol, a Vulcan woman, ensign Hoshi Sato, Commander Charles Tucker III., called Trip, and Ensign Mayweather.
