Black Cat Vol. 04 No. 01 October 1898, The by Various

The Black Cat (1895-1922) was a monthly literary magazine, publishing original short stories, often about uncanny or fantastical topics. Many writers were largely unknown, but some famous authors also wrote original material for this magazine.
The first issue of Volume 4 sported the following stories:

“E tu no!” di Pietro Silvio Rivetta (alias Toddi)

E tu no! fu pubblicato nel 1937, pochi mesi dopo l’occupazione di Addis Abeba da parte dell’ingente spiegamento di forze militari italiane, impegnate nella più imponente guerra coloniale – forse uguagliata successivamente da quella francese in Algeria e poi dalla statunitense in Vietnam, anche se i contesti erano certamente molto diversi – del tutto ingiustificata da un punto di vista economico, come è stato ampiamente analizzato e dimostrato, e realizzata in base a odiosi criteri razzisti al solo scopo di raggiungere banali obiettivi propagandisti di regime. Ed ecco che Toddi (Pier Silvio Rivetta) spreca sull’altare di questa propaganda l’occasione di realizzare un buon romanzo.

Non si può non riconoscere una certa abilità narrativa da parte dell’autore; la ricerca dell’effetto è realizzata in maniera efficace, lo svolgimento della trama corre con ritmo indiavolato – infatti la prima parte si svolge tutta in ferrovia quasi per sottolineare l’incalzare degli avvenimenti – e le numerose digressioni, che talvolta appaiono incomprensibili al primo impatto, non appesantiscono il racconto, anzi tengono desta l’attenzione di chi legge perché sono ben condotte e sapientemente utilizzate. Ma negli ultimi capitoli tutto questo viene utilizzato per una propaganda di regime che casca sullo svolgimento del romanzo in maniera completamente artificiosa e non si può non avvertire uno squilibrio vistoso e, almeno oggi, decisamente fastidioso. All’epoca invece era probabilmente all’altezza delle aspettative del min.cul.pop e dell’attenta censura di Pavolini. Ma anche di quelle di gran parte della popolazione visto che la storia ci conferma che il discorso mussoliniano del 2 ottobre 1935 – abbondantemente citato nella parte finale del romanzo – fu seguito in maniera entusiasta da almeno venti milioni di persone nelle piazze di tutta Italia. Fu il discorso con il quale si dichiarava in pratica guerra all’Etiopia e che è un condensato di tutte le spocchiose argomentazioni care ai nazionalisti, dalla volontà di riscattare la disfatta di Adua del 1896, allo scontro tra nazioni borghesi e nazioni proletarie.

Il giovane sfaccendato e perdigiorno Marco Torrisi, che vive lautamente sovvenzionato da una vecchia e ricca zia, corre dietro a una artista di varietà ma si stanca presto mettendo però i presupposti per una serie di disavventure successive. Si invaghisce di una bella ragazza, che lui crede sposata, che viaggia sola verso la Jugoslavia, e che, per fortunatissima coincidenza incontra nuovamente nel paese di residenza della vecchia zia. Da inguaribile e spendaccione donnaiolo si trasforma quindi in avveduto possidente terriero e, dopo aver ascoltato il famoso discorso del duce, parte per l’Etiopia. Questa trasformazione forse ci poteva anche stare dosando meglio le fasi della trasformazione psicologica del frequentatore di tabarin pronto a correre dietro a ogni gonnella; invece si passa da una serie di situazioni umoristiche al limite del grottesco, divertenti e letterariamente non infime, alla descrizione di una sorta di eroe patriottico che diviene improvvisamente sensibile al proprio ruolo sociale nell’“ora storica per la patria”. Non può mancare anche l’attacco all’Inghilterra, realizzato tramite le diverse vedute all’interno di una improbabile collaborazione imprenditoriale italo-britannica che coinvolge la famiglia di Anna, la bella bionda conosciuta in treno. Se anche queste pagine non avessero una finalità propagandistica, la descrizione della “cugina Meredith” sarebbe da ricordare come una riuscita satira di un certo bigottismo e comico conservatorismo anglicano. Restano le pagine ricche di spunti di autentica comicità, tra tutte la descrizione della nottata da ubriachi dei tre amici perdigiorno del protagonista, e una testimonianza storica delle orrende conseguenze di un mondo della cultura oppresso e manipolato.
