- Ted Breitenstein pitches a no-hitter against the Pittsburg Pirates on April 22.
- Boston wins again: five championships in eight years under manager Frank Selee, twelve in the club's 28 seasons. There will be one more before the move to Milwaukee in 1953.

- First Division - Sheffield United win the 1897-98 title.
- FA Cup - Nottingham Forest beat Derby County 3-1.
- Both the First and Second divisions are expanded from sixteen to eighteen teams, bringing the total number of League sides to 36. Additionally, the test match system was abandoned in favour of automatic relegation and promotion.

- June 11: Jockey Willie Simms became the only African-American jockey to win all three races of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing after he rode Sly Fox to victory in the Preakness Stakes.
