Associazione Calcio Monza Brianza 1912 is an Italian football club, based in Monza, Lombardy. The club was founded in 1912. Monza currently plays in Serie C1/A, having last been in Serie B in 2000. Monza spent the last few years in Serie C1 and Serie C2.
Notable former players include Christian Abbiati, Alessandro Costacurta, Patrice Evra, Zizi Roberts and Pierluigi Casiraghi, a native of Monza.
Founded in 1912 as Monza FBC, and successively as Calcio Monza, the biancorossi has often been very close to be promoted in Serie A: in fact, they ended the Serie B in fourth place in 1995/1956 (under the denomination A.C. Simmenthal Monza, after its sponsor), fifth in 1969/1970 (with coach Gigi Radice) and 1976/1977, fourth in 1977/1978 and 1978/1979 (the latter after having lost a single-match promotion playoff against Pescara), and fifth again 1979/1980. In the next years, Monza has then become friend team with A.C. Milan, who often sent on loan several of its youngsters, such as Costacurta and Abbiati, in order to let them play regularly. The club, who was playing Serie C2 at the time, declared bankruptcy in March 18, 2004, and successively acquired by Giovanni Battista Begnini, who renamed it with the current denomination. In the 2005/2006 serie C1/A campaign, Monza missed a possible promotion to Serie B losing the playoff finals to Genoa C.F.C..
