The American Academy of Religion is the world's largest association of scholars in the field of religion and related topics. It was founded in 1909.

AAR has been criticized for quality of research and it's portrayal of Hinduism. It's unit, RISA, Religions In South Asia, has specifically been criticised for an alleged misportrayal of Hinduism and lack of engaging South Asian scholars or the Hindu diaspora within the US.
