[edit] Synopsis
Marge is reading The Bridges of Madison County one night and wakes up Homer to ask if he thinks the romance has gone out of their marriage. He grumbles and throws the book into a fireplace which has appeared in the bedroom (actually the fireplace in the living room that has been seen in a few episodes). Marge grumbles and goes back to sleep.
In the morning, Marge gets the family together to discuss romance, but they can only come up with vignettes from their failed relationships (and in the parents' case, near-extramarital paramours). However, Homer saves the day when he brings up how he and Marge got together (in clips from the second season episode "The Way We Was"). Ultimately, the kids don't care and end up watching Itchy & Scratchy.
[edit] Trivia
- The episode was generally forced to be produced by 20th Century Fox who wanted another episode; the credited writer Penny Wise (who was actually Jon Vitti) pokes fun at this (from the phrase "Penny wise, pound foolish"). "Mrs. Wise" would be credited as writing a future clip show, "The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular", would credit the director as "Pound Foolish", implying a poke at FOX.
- This is the second Simpsons clip show.
- Many members of the staff have said that this episode only has 1/3 of new animation.
- The blackboard and couch gags are from another episode, and there is a lot of recycled animation instead of new animation throughout the episode, all taking the idea of being a clip show to the extreme.
- The magazine that Lisa holds up at the end of the episode is called Non-Threatening Boys (from Radio Bart).
- This episode is referenced in Arab Strap's song 'The First Big Weekend', described as "a really good episode about love always ending in tragedy, except of course for Marge and Homer"

[edit] Quotes
- Bart and Lisa are watching Itchy and Scratchy. Marge enters. (reused footage from earlier episode)
Marge: How many times can you laugh at that cat getting hit by the moon?
Bart: It's a new episode.
Lisa: Not exactly. They pieced it together from old shows, but it seems new to the trusting eyes of impressionable youth.
Bart: (switches to new footage) Really?
Lisa: Ren and Stimpy do it all the time.
Marge: Yes, they do, and when was the last time you heard anyone talk about Ren and Stimpy? - Lisa: Mom, romance is dead. It was acquired by Hallmark and Disney in a hostile takeover, homogenized, and sold off piece by piece.
