Area code 646 is a New York City telephone area code, created July 1, 1999, due to Area code 212 and Area code 917 running out of available numbers. It was a controversial new overlay in Manhattan because many New Yorkers rebelled at the idea of a different area code, and for a time it was considered that "real" New Yorkers had 212 phone numbers. There was even an episode of the television program Seinfeld ("The Maid"), in which the character Elaine gets her phone number changed and realizes it is a 646 number. Later in the episode, she meets a man in the park and tries to exchange numbers; when he sees the area code he asks where 646 is ("is it in Jersey?") and refuses to take her number, making an excuse and leaves. More recently, 10-digit dialing has become required in New York City, making 646 a more acceptable number since you now have to dial 10 digits for all 212 and 646 numbers.
