Barker's Beauties
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Barker's Beauties is a term, coined by Mark Goodson, referring to the models on the American game show The Price Is Right. The term is derived from the name of the show's host, Bob Barker.
Over the years, there have been many women with the title Barker's Beauty. The best known of the models were Janice Pennington, who was with the show from its premiere in 1972 to 2000; Dian Parkinson (1975-1993); Holly Hallstrom (1977-1983 and 1984-1995); and Kathleen Bradley (1990-2000).
For the first three years of The Price Is Right's life, there were just two Barker's Beauties - Pennington and Anitra Ford. Parkinson joined the cast in 1975 after subbing for Ford for several months, bringing the total to three. Traditionally there are three Barker's Beauties, although for a time during the early 1990s, there were four Beauties (Pennington, Bradley, Hallstrom, and either Parkinson (1990-1993) or Gena Lee Nolin (1993-1995)).
In the earliest episodes of the '70s nighttime show, a third model named Harriet was present; her last name is unknown, but she holds the distinction of being Price's first black model. Additional models besides Parkinson were also featured on the nighttime show during Ford's leave in 1975, including Janice's sister Ann Pennington.
After the departures of Heather Kozar, Nikki Schieler Ziering, and Claudia Jordan in the early 2000s, the cast of Barker's Beauties has been on a rotation. In addition to several models who are more or less a permanent part of the cast, new models appear every few weeks who may eventually join the rotation or may only do a single set of tapings.
Around the time Family Feud was revived on CBS in 1988, Ray Combs made a cameo appearance on Price, coming around on the turntable during a playing of the game Bump and calling Dian and Janice "Combs's Cuties." Bob responded with, "these are Barker's Beauties. Get your own Cuties!"
In February 2006, supermodel Tyra Banks appeared as a guest "Barker's Beauty." She assisted on It's in the Bag and Card Game.
Mark Goodson joked at the beginning of the daytime show's 19th year, "Bob refers to them as Barker's Beauties, but in my fantasies I think of them as Goodson's Girls."
[edit] Nighttime versions
On the first two syndicated nighttime versions of the show, the daytime models did double duty. For the 1994 syndicated show emceed by Doug Davidson, however, an entirely separate cast of models -- Julie Lynn Cialini, Ferrari Farris, and Lisa Stahl -- was used.
[edit] The Price Is Right-Deal or No Deal Connection
Three of Barker's Beauties who worked on The Price Is Right in the 2000s are, or have previously been, briefcase models on NBC's hit primetime game show, Deal or No Deal, which is hosted by actor-comedian Howie Mandel. Both Claudia Jordan and Lisa Gleave became Deal models following their stints on The Price Is Right. Lanisha Cole, the only current Barker's Beauty of the three, joined and left Deal while she was still a Price Is Right model.
