The Battle of Autobot City on Earth was a major turning point in the Autobot/Decepticon War as seen in Transformers: The Movie.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

In 2005, the airspace above Autobot City was infiltrated by Decepticons led by Megatron onboard an Earthbound Autobot shuttle.

The shuttle had been sent to Autobot City by Optimus Prime to obtain energon. Through the spying abilities of Laserbeak, the Decepticons knew of the launch and a large contingent attacked the shuttle and slaughtered the crew, including Brawn, Ironhide, Prowl, and Ratchet. The shuttle sustained a large, Transformer-sized hull breach which was detected on the shuttle's approach by Daniel and Hot Rod on Earth, watching from Lookout Mountain. Hot Rod then fired on the shuttle, revealing the deception and the Decepticons began their attack in earnest

Autobot City under the command of Ultra Magnus transformed into battle station mode as the primary siege began. A distress signal sent out by Blaster, the communications officer of the base, was jammed after only a few seconds of transmission by Blaster's Decepticon counterpart Soundwave; however it was received and reinforcements were sent.

By nightfall, Autobot City had sustained heavy damage, and several Transformers had been killed. The following morning, a shuttle holding Autobot reinforcements, including Optimus Prime and the Dinobots, arrived as Devastator, a Decepticon gestalt, began ripping into the city.

As the Dinobots kept Devastator busy, Prime successfully counter attacked, breaking the back of the Decepticon offensive, running over and gunning down many of the Decepticons before locating his primary target - Megatron. The two commanders clashed for the final time, with Prime being mortally wounded, but not before heavily damaging Megatron. With their leader and many of his troops down, Starscream ordered a retreat.

[edit] Aftermath

In the aftermath of this battle both factions gained new leaders, and new troops - the officers stationed in Autobot City joined the main combat force; Megatron was reformatted by Unicron into Galvatron after being thrown out of Astrotrain by Starscream (who was subsequently vaporized by Galvatron); and Optimus Prime passed the Autobot Matrix of Leadership to Ultra Magnus, who took over as leader of the Autobots for a short time.

Immediately following this battle, a more urgent matter put the civil war on hold; the appearance of the chaos-bringer Unicron in Cybertronian orbit.
