Beani bazar
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Beani Bazar is one of eleven sub-districts (Upazilla) in Sylhet, Bangladesh. The name 'Beani Bazar' means 'Bazar held in the morning'.In the past, Beani Bazar was sorrounded by mostly jungles and there were lots of tigers in those jungles. They used to attack people regularly at night and it was almost impossible for people to go the bazar at night to buy or sell daily necessary items. For this reason the shopping was held in the morning and hence the name Beani Bazar. Before that, Beani Bazar was called 'Pancha Khanda' meaning 'Five Parts'. Many of the Bangladeshis living abroad, especially in England and the USA, come from Beani Bazar.
Beani Bazar is subdivided into eleven unions or councils. Beani Bazar is a union itself and it is numbered as the 6th union. Each of the eleven unions has a chairman and several union members.
The primary occupations of the residents of Beani Bazar are in the field of farming, business, fishing, etc.
Beani Bazar is a very wealthy sub-district in Sylhet mostly due to overseas remittance. However, most of the money goes to the families of expatriates (mostly hardworking laborers) sending the money.Due to lack of investment in industrialization and education, families are more and more relying on foreign currency sent by their family members. Very few students in Beani Bazar finish their university level education due to lack of effort by the community and resources. Many young people and their parents see working in foreign countries more rewarding in the long term than a college degree. This is a major problem with most of the Sylhet district when compared to other districts in Bangladesh. However, it is changing nowadays and people are more concentrating on education. Many of the expatriates from Beani Bazar do realize that there is need for educating younger generations so that they can build their lives as well as the community they live in. Many local and expatriates have contributed to establish English Medium School, Madrasas,Women College, etc. However, some political parties do engange students of the local Beani Bazar College to strengthen their dominance in politics in Beani Bazar. As a result, many meritorious students find themselves with arms rather than books. Many times Beani Bazar College has been closed for extended periods due to armed conflict among political parties in the College. However, no one has taken any drastic measure to stop such violence in the College campus. More ambitious students go for college education in the capital city Dhaka, Sylhet, Chittagong, etc.
