Belle Isle, Leeds
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Belle Isle is a large, early twentieth-century council estate in south Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, centring on a large roundabout called the Belle Isle Circus, the main hub of local traffic in south Leeds. Like much of south Leeds Belle Isle was a deprived area, this has since changed and is now becoming more popular like neighbouring Middleton.
The name Belle Isle derives from the distinctive bell shaped early coal mining pits of the area.
It is the site of the popular Belle Isle Working Men's Club, which hosted many regional and national stars during the 1970s club boom. The club burnt to the ground in 2000, but was subsequently rebuilt.
