[edit] Plot
This episode starts off with Eric Cartman wondering where Kyle is, then saying he hopes he caught AIDS and died, with Stan and Kenny reprimanding him. Kyle announces to the group that (because it is his birthday) he has been given four tickets to Casa Bonita, a restaurant that Cartman dreams about frequently. Cartman is ecstatic and begins singing the "Casa Bonita Song" until Kyle insults him and reveals that he has decided to invite Butters to his birthday party instead. He cites Cartman's tendency towards being a jerk and the fact that he constantly mocks Kyle for being a Jew. Cartman then sets out on a campaign to prove that he is nice; however, kindness is such a foreign concept to Cartman that his attempts are overall unsuccessful (in this episode it emerges that Cartman cannot tell the difference between wearing a nice sweater and actually being nice), and Butters gets invited. Cartman then talks to Kyle, saying that he was sorry for all the past abuse he had inflicted upon him and saying that he hoped they could still be friends despite the predicament. Kyle, touched and knowing how much Cartman wanted to go to Casa Bonita, says that, if Butters is for some reason unable to go, Cartman can. This, of course, was Cartman's whole evil plan, and sets to work to get rid of Butters.
Cartman tricks Butters into thinking that a meteor is about to hit Earth, and arranges for him to go into hiding to escape the disaster; and, with Butters gone, Cartman figures he's set to go to the restaurant with Kyle. However, Kyle, saying that it "doesn't feel right" to go and enjoy himself after finding out that Butters is missing, decides to postpone the party for a week. Cartman manages to keep Butters out of sight for that long, and when Butters finally finds out he's been tricked, Cartman and the others are already outside Casa Bonita. Kyle's mom gets a call telling her what's happening, and they confront Cartman, notifying him that the police are on their way. Knowing that his entire plan is close to ruin, Cartman escapes, running into the restaurant. He wants to re-enact all the "fun" that he had in his dream before he is caught; after dashing through the various attractions of Casa Bonita and sampling the food, he is trapped by the approaching police and jumps off the waterfall. They catch up with him floating on his back in the water below. When a police officer explains all the trouble that Cartman's caused, and that he's going to be sent to Juvenile Hall for a week, he asks Cartman if it was worth it. Cartman responds dreamily, "totally" before the credits roll.
[edit] Trivia
- Casa Bonita is a real restaurant located in Lakewood, Colorado, one of Denver's largest suburbs. Its portrayal in this episode is surprisingly accurate, as the real restaurant includes the cliff divers, costumed entertainers, and Black Bart's Cave. There were originally two other locations, one in Tulsa, Oklahoma and a headquarters in Oklahoma City. The creators said that they, like every kid they grew up with, loved going to Casa Bonita as much as Cartman does in this episode.[citation needed]
