Chinese diplomatic missions
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The People's Republic of China has a large diplomatic network, representing the country's signficant economic, commercial, political, cultural and military links around the world.
Since ancient times the Middle Kingdom has been sending out emissaries to surrounding states. Emperor Pao Chan sent a mission to Imperial Rome as early as 98 AD. In later centuries China began to retreat inwards, neglecting its foreign relations to its eventual peril. China later was forced to open up after loosing the Second Opium War in 1860. Knowing that it too would need to know more about the world in order to survive, China opened its first embassy in modern times in Britain in 1877, followed by an embassy in the United States the following year.
For over fifty years the PRC has been competing with the Republic of China for diplomatic recognition in the international community. Ever since South Africa switched its alliegence to Beijing in 1998 only a handful of small nation states have full diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Consequently the PRC has opened embassies in distant and relatively inconsequential countries like Saint Lucia and Cape Verde to demonstrate its sovereignty.
