[edit] 'Third World War'

Unless I've missed something (which is quite possible given that I stopped reading 2000 AD regularly from Prog 764), I don't think the Atomic Wars has ever been referred to as either the 'Third World War' or 'World War III'. There's a throwaway comment in 'Killkraze' part 2 (Prog 544) that says something along the lines of "We've got World War III on replay" but there's nothing that suggests it's the Atomic Wars. 86.29.94.115 09:35, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

It was a global war, as evidenced by the fact that the whole world ended up a radioactive desert.

In "Chopper: Song of the Surfer" somebody describes a row between Chopper and his girlfirend as World War Four.

In a later Judge Dredd story (can't remember which one right now) Dredd compares a gunfight with WW5.

The Atomic Wars might not normally be called WW3, but that is what it was. Go ahead and change it if you want to, but I think "World War III" is slightly more informative for people who are not familiar with the topic. Richard75 12:07, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

I would rather get the opinions of other people before changing it. Personally, I think it should be referred to as the Atomic Wars as that's what it's called in the comic. I don't see how 'World War III' is any more informative, either, as the tag 'world war' has certain connotations that might not apply. The Volgan War could just as easily be referred to as 'World War III', as could the Great Atom War that featured in Strontium Dog. 86.29.94.115 13:13, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

WWIII seems reasonable shorthand. Granted there is a debate about the exact numbering (some claim we are currently in WWIV) and there is also some debate about whether the Volgan War fits in the Dredd Universe (Wagner seems to say no while Mills clearly thinks it does) but I think it helps people grasp the scope and scale - otherwise you'd have to go into detail. I would still argue that the term 'atomic wars', plural, could quite feasibly suggest something other than a world war, irrespective of its global impact. Hence my erring against stating categorically that it was indeed a world war, less so World War III. 86.29.94.115 14:11, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

But the point is that it is a largescale global war causing destruction on all the continents (OK I'm unsure about Antarctica). I'm unsure how else one would define a world war. (Emperor 17:19, 1 November 2006 (UTC))
