Christian Democracy for the Autonomies (Italian: Democrazia Cristiana per le Autonomie), often referred to as New DC (Nuova DC), is a minor Italian centrist political party founded October 25, 2004 by former Union of Christian and Centre Democrats MP Gianfranco Rotondi. The name refers to the old Christian Democracy party, disbanded in the early 1990s after the Mani Pulite affair. Its headquarters are in Rome.
From its formation it has been part of the House of Freedoms coalition. In the regional elections of April 2005 it presented its own candidates in many regions. However, the list showed unpromising results.
[edit] 2006 general election
The party took part in the April 2006 election on a joint list with the right wing of the Socialist Party New PSI. The two former First Republic ruling parties created this list in order to revive the political culture of the past.
It gained 285,744 votes (0.7%) for the Chamber of Deputies and 190,724 (0.6%) for the Senate. Despite not having passed the 2% threshold it still elected four deputies since it was the party which received more votes under the 2% in its respective alliance (House of Freedoms).
The elected candidates of the party are Paolo Cirino Pomicino and Massimo Nardi; two more candidates have been promised a seat as candidates of Forza Italia which in fact have been elected. The secretary of the party, Gianfranco Rotondi, has been elected senator on the lists of Forza Italia. The DC has in total six MPs: four in the Chamber of Deputies and two (Gianfranco Rotondi and Mario Cutrufo) in the Senate.
The DC and its four MPs (Chamber of Deputies) form a joint parliamentary group with its former ally the Socialist Party New PSI, comprising six MPs in total, which makes it a minimal force in Parliament.
