Cockett is the name of an electoral ward, a community and a suburb in the City and County of Swansea, South Wales.
The electoral ward consists of some or all of the following areas: Cadle, Cwmdu, Coedweig, Gendros, Gors, Fforestfach, Cockett and Waunarlwydd, in the parliamentary constituency of Swansea West. The community does not have its own community council. The ward is bounded by Kingsbridge and Penderry to the north; Cwmbwrla to the east; Townhill to the south east; Sketty and Killay North to the south; and Gowerton to the west.
The suburb of Cockett is located about 1.5 miles north west from Swansea City Centre. The headquarters of Swansea Police is based here.
[edit] Fforest-fach
The suburb of Fforest-fach (or Fforestfach) lies immediately north of the suburb of Cockett. There is a significant industrial Estate in the area with a range of light industries. Fforest-fach is home to a busy out of town shopping Complex with significant parking problems during peak hours, some of the stores include Tesco Extra, Borders, Marks & Spencer, JJB Sports, Next, Outfit, WH SMith, Dixons XL, The Carphone Warehouse, Pizza Hut and Thomson. The area is well suited to light industry and out of town shopping due to its proximity to the M4 motorway and several dual carriageways.
[edit] Waunarlwydd
The suburb of Waunarlwydd (English: The Lord's Meadow) adjoins Fforest-fach and Cockett to the West. A rapidly growing mostly residential area Waunarlwydd is home to a large Aluminium Rolling Operation owned by the American Conglomerate Alcoa.
Despite its ever expanding size the 'Village' as it is still referred to by its inhabitants boasts a small community feel. The local rugby team Waunarlwydd RFC, won promotion to the Welsh Premiership in 2005 and have provided several players to Welsh teams since the clubs inception in 1900.
The pronunciation of Waunarlwydd sounds like "Wine are Lloyd" in English.
