[edit] Boundaries
The boundaries of the constituency are not contiguous with the local government district of Crewe and Nantwich, in particular omitting much of the rural area west of Nantwich, and parts of the north of the town of Crewe around Leighton Hospital, which are in the Eddisbury constituency.
[edit] Boundary Review
Following their review of parliamentary representation in Cheshire, the Boundary Commission for England have made minor changes to the existing arrangement as a consequence of population changes. The electoral wards used in this modified seat are;
- Alexandra, Barony Weaver, Birchin, Coppenhall, Delamere, Englesea, Grosvenor, Haslington, Leighton, Maw Green, St Barnabas, St John's, St Mary's, Shavington, Valley, Waldron, Wellington, Wells Green, Willaston, Wistaston Green, and Wybunbury, from the borough of Crewe and Nantwich
[edit] Member of Parliament
Since 1983, Crewe and Nantwich has been represented for Labour by Gwyneth Dunwoody, with steadily increasing majorities between the elections of 1983, 1987, 1992, 1997 and 2001. Her majority was slightly reduced in the 2005 election. If she remains an MP until the expected end of the Parliament elected in 2005, she will become the oldest woman MP ever, and will exceed the 34 year record for continuous service for a woman MP, currently held by Barbara Castle, and the 38 year record for interrupted service by a woman MP, currently held by Dame Irene Ward.

[edit] Politics and history of the constituency
The constituency was created for the 1983 General Election, out of parts of the former Labour seat of Crewe and the former Conservative seat of Nantwich. Since its creation, the seat has been represented by Labour, with steadily increasing majorities until 2001; however, it is thought that a considerable part of the Labour vote is a personal vote for the veteran MP Gwyneth Dunwoody who has represented Crewe since 1974. In recent years substantial areas of upmarket housing have been built which may dilute the Labour vote in future.
