Cryptoexplosion

The term "cryptoexplosive (or cryptovolcanic) structure" was used to describe impact craters before the extent to which impacts occur was realized. Any anomalous circular structure, or circular deformation of rock strata was assumed to be caused by explosive volcanism. Now such circular structures are described either as impact or volcanic craters, or as unconfirmed craters modified by varying degrees of certainty as to an impact origin (Koeberl and Anderson, 1996). Jeptha Knob in north-central Kentucky is an example of an unconfirmed crater.
