D. S. Senanayake College was inaugurated in a prefabricated building on the 10th of February 1967, with 167 kindergarten students in memory of Sri Lanka's first prime Minister the Hon. D. S Senanayake. It was the dream of one person, the Honourable I.M.R.A. Iriyagolla, the then Minister of Education. It was realized by the vision and the missionary zeal of Mr. R.I.T Alles our founder principal. He was ably assisted by a dedicated band of teachers and a loyal and ever enthusiastic body of parents.
Mr. Alles, his teachers and parents transformed a school that began as a shed into a massive national educational Institution that has produced men of calibre who have excelled in the fields of Medicine,Information Technology,Engineering,Commerce and Sports at not merely national levels but also internationally..
This rapid growth was achieved within a very short time of 30 years and is still sustained, by The untiring efforts of successive principals, this great school has been blessed with. The College has now more than 30 permanent buildings , playgrounds, a fully equipped cricket ground , science laboratories with all facilities, a computer laboratory with complete network facilities, a gymnasium and a swimming pool.
A significant undisputed feat in the rapid development of this school is that from its inception, successive governments of whatever political hue took pride in contributing most unreservedly towards the progress of the institution in appreciation of its work and successes.

D.S.Senanayake is situated at Gregory's Road, Colombo 7, Sri Lanka. The College presently has more than 6000 students, with 275 members in the academic and non-academic staff . Students are taught in Sinhala, Tamil and English languages (for Advanced Level subjects). English is also taught as a second language in all classes. Students have been provided with 2 state of the art computer laboratories. Foreign Languages such as French and Japanese are available to the students.
