[edit] Background

"A quiet worker, David doesn't talk much about his past. It's not because he's unfriendly; he's simply a man of few words. With sharp eyesight and deft movements with his knife, he proves his worth getting around in a scene of bloodshed."

David's past is never discussed within the game. His Special Items hint that he was once a juvenile delinquent, perhaps explaining his prowess with knives. Other Special Items suggest he is possibly a Native American, that he collects weaponry and tools, and that he is self-reliant to a fault. David is fascinated by Japanese history and culture, especially in relation to strength and "Bushido", also known as the "way of the warrior." He likens himself to a lion: strong, adaptive, resilient, fierce and dominant. His pride in this comparison is displayed through his clothing, tools and equipment.

[edit] Items

Tool Box: David carries the tools of his trade in a belt fastened to his waist. These regular household items become deadly makeshift weapons in the hands of this mysterious plumber. David's repair kit includes nine pieces of Vinyl Tape, 12 Monkey Wrenches, a Folding Knife, and three sets of Spare Parts.

  • The Folding Knife can be equipped as a weapon and used in David's "Knife Combo" attack (see "Special Actions").
  • The Monkey Wrenches are also used in another of David's special actions, but he carries only a limited amount per scenario (12).
  • The Spare Parts can be used three times per scenario to fix a broken item, such as a "Broken Handgun" or "Broken Shotgun". In one instance, these junk pieces can also be used to turn a useless replica "M79" into a fully functional weapon.
  • Vinyl Tape can be used nine times per scenario to combine certain items into homemade weapons. Items include the "Battery" and "Iron Pipe", "Butcher's Knife" and "Wooden Pole", "Lighter" and "Pesticide Spray", etc. David's tape (all nine pieces) can also be used to seal leaking pipes when short of time or patience.

Lighter: David carries a Zippo lighter with the "J's Bar" logo inscribed on the side. The Lighter can be used to ignite Molotov Cocktails, light the fuse on Time Bombs, or, in David's hands, to turn a can of virtually harmless Pesticide Spray into a devastating Flame Spray. The Lighter can also be used to read secret graffiti scribblings in several locations of various scenarios, as well as to find certain items in the "Flashback" scenario. Many players ditch the Lighter as soon as they can at the start of a level, as generally if a Lighter's needed, it can be found relatively easily over the course of a scenario. The exception is when one is playing on Very Hard difficulty, as having the Lighter accessible and ready at the start of the scenario can be the difference between life and death.

[edit] Special Actions

Wrench Throw: David can toss his Monkey Wrenches at an opponent, door, or any other type of removable obstruction. This thrown weapon causes more damage than a regular lunge attack, and will almost always send the average zombie tumbling to the ground after a well-aimed throw. However, the number of Monkey Wrenches available per scenario are limited to those already carried on David's person at the beginning of each scenario (12). These wrenches cannot be procured during scenarios, and should not be squandered needlessly.

Knife Combo: David's reluctance to speak of his past indicates a level of shame or denial possibly relating to a juvenile criminal history. His impressive skills certainly suggest that David was (and possibly still is) an unstable and dangerous individual when encountered under hostile circumstances. Equip any knife, and with the right timing, David can perform a devastating combination knife attack. Although this attack is possible even when armed with only the weak "Folding Knife", a larger and more dangerous weapon should be appropriated as quickly as possible. The "Survival Knife" is highly recommended, although the "Butcher's Knife" can be fixed to the end of a "Wooden Pole" when found.

[edit] Costumes

  • David:A David's default plumber's overalls and equipment
  • David:B Club Scene (Outbreak):

  • David:C Sole Survivor (Outbreak: File #2):

Retrieve the following SP Items: Suede Pants, Wild Briefs, Wild Cologne, The Body's Limit, Barefoot Healing. David is bare-chested and barefoot, with his hair worn loose.

[edit] Fate

Like his fellow survivors, David has multiple variations of his attempted escape from Raccoon City. In previous releases, it has generally been the standard for Capcom to use a character's "best" ending as his/her "canonical" event. During the "End of the Road" scenario, unless directly controlled by the player, David will be killed beneath the Umbrella Corporation's research facility whilst attempting to rendezvous with a nearby transport helicopter, only to return to life and attack his former comrades. However, this event does not serve to drive the storyline in any particular manner, and can be safely assumed as non-canonical. David probably escaped Raccoon City before its destruction, his various endings are listed below, each depending on the player's actions during the final scenario of each game.

Outbreak - "Decisions, decisions" scenario

Best ending: David administers the Daylight serum to himself, acquiring several extra samples for mass-production after his escape. After defeating Thanatos, David hastily boards the Raccoon Fire Department's rescue helicopter alongside R.F.D. officers Danny and Gill, and escapes the region before the U.S. Government can launch its missile attack against the doomed city. As David peers out across the remnants of the Arklay Mountains, he notices Gill succumbing to the effects of the T-Virus only feet away. Turning to face Danny in the cockpit, he notices that he, too, has also been infected. David, paralyzed with fear, can only watch as the two former firefighters close in for the kill. Opening his eyes, David realizes that it was just a lingering nightmare borne of his experiences during the outbreak. A concerned Danny asks David if he is feeling okay, to which David replies that he will be fine and that, eventually, he will be able to forget the horrors that he experienced in Raccoon City.

Good ending: Although having used the Daylight serum to purge the T-Virus from his body, David has failed to procure another sample for mass-production to combat the virus on an international scale. Foreseeing a bleak future ahead, David does not fail to realize that mankind's time may now be approaching its end.

Bad ending: Although having secured a sample of the Daylight serum, David remains infected. Handing the sample over to Danny and Gill for mass production, David remains behind alongside fellow survivor, Mark Wilkins, realizing that escape is now impossible. As the sun rises, the two linger outside of the university, quietly contemplating what awaits. Determined not to go quietly, Mark and David repair a nearby IFV, abandoned by the U.B.C.S. team destroyed earlier by the rampaging Thanatos, and prepare the vehicle for combat. Mark jumps into the driver's hatch, whilst David cocks the mounted machine gun for action. As the missiles close in, the pair charge towards an enormous gathering of zombies, ready for one final monumental battle...

Worst ending: Having failed to procure the Daylight serum before Raccoon University's destruction, David is left with the sole task of fending off the relentless attacks of the inexorable Thanatos. Finally defeating the creature, David hastily boards the R.F.D.'s rescue helicopter before the destruction of the city. As a blinding flash of fire and light engulfs their previous location, Danny comments on the trio's good fortune, happy to have survived the containment operation by mere minutes. David, barely comprehending Danny's words, collapses in his seat. As the helicopter flies over the mountains, David opens his blank eyes, releasing a barely audible moan and reaching for the throats of the unsuspecting firefighters.

Outbreak: File #2 - "End of the Road" scenario

Bad endings - Run like the Wind, Up and Away: Having failed to rescue Linda before the initialization of "Mission Code XX", David escapes to a rallying point located on the outskirts of Raccoon City. As he watches the city burn, David comments on Umbrella's recklessness, remarking that "The shit hit the fan and the fan finally busted" due to Umbrella's refusal to discontinue their dangerous research before it finally caused damage that they wouldn't be able to conceal. David then states that tomorrow is another day, and even without zombies, there is still plenty of shit that he will have to go through in order to survive the trials that lie ahead.

Good endings - Run like the Linda, Up and Away With Linda: After rescuing Linda before the destruction of Raccoon City, a cure for the T-Virus is created and Linda testifies in the Supreme Court, giving a first-hand account of the Umbrella Corporation's atrocities committed in Raccoon City. After an unknown period of time, David is seen at an unspecified port having a conversation with a friend over the phone. Boarding a container ship named the "Silver Star", David gazes out to sea and watches the sun set over the ocean.

[edit] Trivia

  • David has no known friends or relatives in Raccoon City. True to his reputation as a "lone wolf", besides his interaction with Linda and Carter, he has no relationship with any other character throughout the series.
  • The "Mechanic's Memo" file found in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis makes a reference to David.
  • Probably the most promiscuous character in the series, making several sexual comments about his choice of clothing, and ability (or lack thereof) to get laid. This includes: A pair of underwear that he finds having "plenty of room below", a leather jacket that will increase his chances of having sex "I'll have no problems getting laid with this", wearing strong cologne (made with proven tiger hormones), and directly stating his desire for "...an ice cold beer, maybe a lay." to congratulate himself on killing an infected, rampaging elephant.
