Dubai Millennium
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dubai Millennium was a racehorse owned by the Godolphin stables, who raced predominantly in Europe. He was by Seeking The Gold, out of Colorado Dancer. He is considered to be one of the best racehorses from 1990 onwards.
Dubai Millennium was foaled on the 20th of March 1996. He was initially named Yazaar and sent as a 2-year-old to be trained by David Loder, which was the policy of Godolphin at the time. Shiekh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, owner of Godolphin, was desperate to win the 2000 Dubai World Cup and asked Loder which of his current 2-year-olds would stand the best chance of fulfilling this ambition. Loder selected Yazaar and he became Dubai Millennium.
Dubai Millennium made his debut as a two year old at Yarmouth race course, over a mile. He started odds-on favorite and won by five lengths despite being eased down by jockey Frankie Dettori in the closing stages. At three, he was aimed at the Epsom Derby, easily winning his two preparatory races. The Derby, run over a mile and a half, proved to be too long a distance for him, and he finished ninth. It would be the only time he was beaten.
He ran three more times as a three year old, always winning easily, including a six length victory in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot Racecourse. The following year he would win his most famous victory - The 2000 Dubai World Cup. A plan 2-years in the making culminated with a crushing six length victory in the world's richest horse race, marking him out as an amazing racehorse, a fact borne out by his Timeform rating of 140 - the highest in the world since Dancing Brave achieved a similar mark in 1986, and only beaten by twelve horses in the 20th Century.
Unfortunately, Dubai Millennium died of grass sickness a year after retiring to stud, only producing one crop of offspring. Amongst these was Dubawi, winner of the Group 1 National Stakes at 2 and the Irish 2000 Guineas and Prix Jacques le Marois at 3.
